As for what gave them the idea to stack their subscription so far into the future, the Redditor got the idea after seeing someone in Japan sharing a similar story. This isn’t a closing loophole either. Sony has a price cap on how much it costs to upgrade an Essential subscription to Premium regardless of how many years you have stacked, and right now that cap is $199.99. It used to be $100 less which means the Redditor could have stacked their sub for even less had they exacted their idea sooner.

OP hasn’t shared exactly how much it cost, however, assuming they paid $79.99 for Essential for 24 years, that first step likely cost them just shy of $2,000. It’s the step after that where they really saved themselves some cash.

Once they secured 24 years of PS Plus Essential, they took the plunge and upgraded to Premium, but they did so for a heavily discounted rate. OP shared a screenshot of the Premium discount they were offered, snatching at the chance to upgrade Essential to Premium until 2048 for just $199.99. Without the huge 89 percent discount on the cost to upgrade for the next 24 years, it would have cost almost as much as the initial 24 years of Essential subs to move on up to Premium for that long.
Their subscription to PS Plus Premium will now run until June 27, 2025, and it cost them roughly $2,100 to make that happen. Actually, it likely cost them a bit less than that as in the replies, they noted that they used gift cards given to them as presents to cut the cost down even more. They’ve also told others that PlayStation has capped the cost to upgrade to Premium at $199.99, hence the hefty discount.

The biggest risk here is that there’s no way of knowing whether PS Plus will even still exist in 2048. If it does, it will almost certainly look and work a lot differently than it does now. This time 24 years ago, PlayStation had just released the PS2. Consoles likely won’t be released at quite the same rate as they have been in the past, but there’s a chance OP could still have access to PS Plus on the PlayStation 8 if the service still exists three generations from now.
