After its release in August 2024,Black Myth: Wukongquickly established itself as one of the best games of the year. Although its intricate storytelling and top-notch gameplay are a large part of this, the boss fights are also a standout aspect of the game.
Divided into a total of six chapters, Black Myth: Wukong doesn’t waste any time dropping you into boss fight after boss fight as soon as it starts. In the first chapter alone, there are more than ten bosses of varying difficulties, both compulsory and optional.
11Bullguard
The very first boss fight of the game, it comes as no surprise that it would be the easiest of all. Armed with a poleaxe, the Bullguard tries his very best not to let you go any further, whirling his weapon around and attempting to cleave you in two with it.
More of an introductory tutorial type of fight, the Keeper (aka the tiny old man with the staff) intercedes midway, using it to teach the Immobilise spell to you. The boss is easily dealt with after this short cutscene, allowing you to proceed to harder, infinitely more difficult foes.
10Baw Li Guhh Lang
At first, everything seemed fine. You’re exploring what the Bamboo Grove area has to offer, deciding to walk along the river. You come across an open-space area and deal with several minor frog enemies - nothing out of the ordinary. Then curiosity consumes you, and you decide to tread further, only for a gigantic frog to come leaping out of nowhere.
Baw Li Guhh Langis not the most difficult of bosses. He doesn’t wield any lightning or fire like the other bosses on this list, mainly relying on physical attacks. Aside from dodging the occasional stomps, swipes and leg kicks, this frog boss is a walk in the park compared to the others.
9Guangzhi
The first boss fought in the reveal trailer,Guangzhiis fast, a cyclone of fiery doom that wields his dual-bladed spear with deadly effect. Not only do his attacks seem endless, but Guangzhi seems determined not to give you time to recover.
The boss cartwheels around the arena, even flinging his spear at you, only to summon it back. And worst of all, he zips around dealing considerable damage if you don’t dodge fast enough. The game certainly isn’t pulling any punches, even when it comes to mini-bosses.
8Guangmou
Located not far from the Snake Trail in Bamboo Grove,Guangmoulies at the end of dozens of snake-like skeletal enemies that bug you to no end. This boss is the king of spamming projectile attacks, wielding his fan to send some your way or simply migrating from one corner to another.
What’s worse, Guangmou summons snakes from the ground to spew more projectiles your way, so you’re forced to dodge as much as your Stamina bar allows to avoid getting hit. Thankfully, this boss staggers easy, so dealing even light attacks or immobilising him before he can attack and following up with a heavy hit would do the job.
7Wandering Wight
Encountered in the very first area in the Forest of Wolves,the Wandering Wightis a hard boss to miss, his overly large head catching your eye instantly. The boss lumbers aimlessly about from one corner to the next, only to turn deadly as soon as he sees you.
Use the pillars to slow him down briefly. Stand behind one and he’ll charge at it, which will result in the boss staggering.
A master of delayed attacks that deplete your health massively, you will initially face difficulty trumping this boss. Not only are his hits far-reaching, but his magic attacks can kill you in one hit if you’re not careful. A frustrating boss fight to have at the start of the game, it merely serves as a sign of things to come.
6Ling Xu Zi
As menacing as he was depicted in the reveal trailer,Ling Xu Zican be found at the Guanyin Temple in the Forest of Wolves. Agile and relentless with his attacks, this lupine terror hits like a tank, rolling about in an attempt to squash you.
The Wolf Demon leaps from one roof to the next, before lunging in your direction to rend you in two with his massive claws. Fast and aggressive, it will take all the patience you possess to defeat him.
5Elder Jinchi
Located in the Ancient Guanyin Temple,Elder Jinchiis another hidden boss that can only be accessed once you ringthree bells scattered across the Black Wind Mountain. However, this boss fight is not as challenging as expected for a secret boss.
Zombie-like husks are dotted around the boss arena, and you can kill them to regain your health. Elder Jinchi can also use them to heal, but killing them fast enough before the boss absorbs them solves that issue. Overall, his attacks become predictable after dealing with the Wandering Wight since their movesets are so similar.
4Black Wind King
The Black Wind King is the penultimate bossfight in Chapter One and is essentially a taster for the boss fight with Black Bear Guai. Located in the Cave Interior at Black Wind Cave, this boss inflicts wide-ranging spear attacks and even spits fire from his mouth.
This boss is a difficult foe to pin down, as he tends to disappear and reappear, transforming into a blue-black mist to evade as well as deal damage. However, once you face the Black Wind King’s second form, you’ll be begging to return to this boss.
3Black Bear Guai
The final boss of Chapter One,the Black Bear Guaiis the second form of the Black Wind King and a continuation of that fight. The Black Bear Guai cuts an intimidating figure with its red eyes and gigantic form, and his attacks are extremely aggressive, barely giving you a moment to breathe or heal.
The Fireproof Mantle is a great tool to use midway through the fight. Just be sure to defeat Elder Jinchi beforehand to get it.
Midway through the fight, the boss shifts into a fiery mist that zips through the boss arena, inflicting damage along the way. Not only do you have to evade the flames spewing all over the place, but you also have to dodge the punches, stomps and rolls this overgrown bear has in store.
This white-haired, snake-eyed boss made the last seem tame in comparison. Found guarding an entryway in the Bamboo Grove,the Whiteclad Nobleswiftly lets you know he’s not messing around with each jab and lunge of his spear.
But the worst is yet to come. A second phase ensues, and you’re treated to a cutscene of the boss shifting the lower half of his body to that of a serpent. Using the open-water environment to his advantage, the Whiteclad Noble is scarily agile and fast. You’ll be throwing your controller across the room before you know it.
