Summary
If you were hoping to watchthe God of War live-action television series anytime soon, then you’ll likely have to wait a bit longer. That’s because the series, which is in development at Amazon,is reportedly starting over.
That start over seemingly includes writing new scripts and hiring a new writers' room altogether. To this point, the series has not announced a cast or release window since its initial announcement in 2022,though Christopher Judge would love to portray Kratos.
Please, Please Do Not Go
According to a new report from Deadline, theGod of WarTV series is effectively attempting a do-over. That’s because, according to Deadline, showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins has exited the project. He’s not the only one who’s departed, either.
Per that very same report, Executive Producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have also departed the in-production series. Their departures came after multiple scripts for the first season had been completed. Those scripts were reportedly lauded bySonyand Prime.
With the trio gone, a new writers' room is being hired. Whenever the series does launch, it’ll air on Prime Video. Other Sony live-series adaptations have aired on HBO, along with Peacock, giving Sony a third streaming partner as it continues to expand its portfolio of video game adaptations.
God Of War Was Announced In 2022
The departure news comes as a massive blow toa series that was originally announced in 2022. Whileit was originally rumored that God of War was not one of the series that Sony was looking to adapt, thattune changed in mid 2022 when it was revealed that Sony and Prime would be collaborating.
That collaboration will retell the story of the 2018 pseudo-reboot.At one point, Amazon’s head of television, Vernon Sanders, said that the adaptation will be “incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own.“That was in 2022, though, and updates were scarce until Thursday’s Deadline report.
All is not lost for Sony, because The Last of Us Season 2 is slated for a release at some point in 2025. Meanwhile, the Until Dawn movie adaptation, which recently wrapped filming, will release on July 09, 2025. In other words, even with the news, Sony still has a packed slate of video game content.
