Astro Bothas proved to be a hit among both critics and PlayStation players, combining a nostalgia-fueled celebration of PlayStation’s history with platforming mechanics that are among the best in the genre. However, critical darlings don’t always perform commercially, a truth that’s observable across all forms of media.
It’s early days yet but according toChristopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz, Astro Bot hasn’t sold particularly well in the United Kingdom’s retail market. This doesn’t necessarily mean Astro Bot is selling poorly, but how a game performs in the physical market can be indicative of how it’s performing overall.
Astro Bot’s Sales Aren’t Spectacular
“Astro Bot’s UK sales (physical only so far) aren’t huge,” Dring’s post reads. “Opening week is about a third lower than 2021’s Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, but I expect a longer sales tail for Astro. It’s certainly sold more copies in the UK in 2 days than Concord sold worldwide.”
Dring is likely correct in his assessment of the tail of Astro Bot’s sales. It’s not a game that massive numbers of players will have been excited about on release, but the plaudits Astro Bot has earned will likely drive more players to buy it in the coming weeks.
Astro Bot’s outpacing of Concord’s worldwide sales is indicative of just how poorly Firewalk Studios' hero shooter sold and sheds more light on Sony’s decision to shut the game down as quickly as it did.
We’ll likely get a clearer picture of Astro Bot’s commercial performance if/when Sony decides to share sales data. It’s difficult to gauge the player bases of non-Steam games as this data isn’t readily accessible.
