Summary
Baldur’s Gate 3is a game of limitless possibilities and permutations, meaning you’ll rarely find your progress impeded. However, in rare circumstances, you can trap yourself in an inescapable situation, which is exactly what happened to one Baldur’s Gate 3 player.
Anyone who’s played Baldur’s Gate 3 for an extended period will know the Emerald Grove. The druid encampment acts as a starting town for wounded adventurers who have just wandered off the Nautiloid.
After gaining access to the inner part of the Grove, you’re able to encounter Halsin’s apprentice Nettie. After coming clean about being infected by an Illithid parasite, Nettie can react in several ways depending on how the dialogue plays out. Most often, she’ll allow the player to leave as long as they swear to drink a vial of poison if they feel themselves turning into Mind Flayers.
However, if you refuse, Nettie will lock the doors and become hostile. After defeating her, you’ll be able to equip her circlet, Key of the Ancients, to unlock the room’s doors. However, using a piece of equipment to open a locked door isn’t a commonly utilised mechanic in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you weren’t paying attention, you could easily just send Nettie’s loot back to the Camp.
Undone by a Giant Door
That’s what happened toa user who posted on Redditabout the situation after finding themselves soft-locked a few hours into an Honour Mode save. Unaware of its significance, they sent the Key of the Ancients back to camp, and there are no do-overs in Honour Mode.
After doing this, your options for leaving the room are limited. If you have Thieves' Tools, you can lockpick your way out, or if you have the spell Knock, you can magically open the door. If you have a mobility spell like Misty Step, you could also potentially teleport out of the room. However, if you lack all of these potential escape tools in this very specific scenario, you will be completely stuck.
Crucially, the room also acts as a hostile zone where you’re able to’t fast-travel or enter Camp, eliminating those two options. This remains the case even after Nettie is defeated. Unfortunately, Nettie’s attempts to protect the Grove may have doomed a negligent party to become Mind Flayers trapped in a room until the Netherbrain conquers Faerun.
The moral of the story? Always read item descriptions before you send everything back to Withers to sort through.
