Summary

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 7 was released last week, adding the long-awaited modding toolkit toLarian Studios' beloved RPG. Though Larian has previously stated they can’t officially support a level editor because of “cross-platform technical constraints” and because Baldur’s Gate 3 is a licensed product, the developers didn’t make it very difficult for the community to unlock the level editing features of the toolkit.

Siegfre, a user on Nexus Mods, has released anunlocked version of Baldur’s Gate 3’s modding toolkit. This functionality includes level and save editing, something that fans of the game desperately wanted. The possibilities are now endless, with the community able to create entire expansions and campaigns.

The Dark Urge in Baldur’s Gate 3

Endless Possibilities

One of the advantages of Dungeons & Dragons is how it enables dungeon masters and players to channel their creativity to craft a memorable story. The community now has the tools required to transplant this tabletop feature into Baldur’s Gate 3, the implications of which are exciting.

Thecommunity suspectsthat Larian Studios made ‘unlocking’ the toolkit purposefully easy to empower the community without making the studio liable for the community’s creations. We already know that Larian doesn’t plan to release any expansions, so allowing the community to create them will ensure a long lifespan for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Larian is currently working on two unknown projects. Hasbro, meanwhile, is looking for a studio to create Baldur’s Gate 4 after Larian announced it would no longer work on the series.

There haven’t been any substantial mods created yet using the unlocked toolkit, but as with anything in modding, it’s only a matter of time. It will likely be some months yet before we see mods worthy of being called expansions, however.

The other highlight of Patch 7 is the addition of more evil endings for the more dark-minded among us. There’s an ending for those who decided toteam up with the Emperor, and adedicated evil endingfor every origin character.
