Summary
Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 7 added the promised modding toolkit, albeit without the ability to edit saves and levels.Larian Studioshad previously announced the toolkit wouldn’t support these features because of cross-platform technical restraints, and also because Baldur’s Gate 3 is a licensed title and as such has certain restraints placed on it by Hasbro.
However, a user on Nexus Mods named Siegfre was quickly able tounlock the aforementioned featureson the toolkit, allowing modders to access save and level editing. This has enabled endless possibilities, and the community is already throwing around fantastical ideas.
Fans Want Classic Games Remade In Baldur’s Gate 3
“Homebrew DLC, whole new campaigns… At this point, creativity is probably the only limiting factor. It’ll be interesting to say the least!”, reads a comment on aReddit thread about the topic.
There have been calls for modders to remake other beloved CRPGs, like Dragon Age: Origins and Icewind Dale. The former is probably a lost cause because of the amount of voice acting you’d need to port over, but more classic titles like Icewind Dale, or even the original Baldur’s Gate are slightly more possible. There’s also the possibility of adapting beloved Dungeons & Dragons campaign books like Curse of Strahd.
However, these projects would still require a lot of manpower and years to come to fruition. We’ve seen what’s possible with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout’s respective modding communities, with projects like The Forgotten City and Fallout: London being of a very high quality.
Divinity: Original Sin 2, Larian Studios' most recent release before Baldur’s Gate 3, had a similar level editor but doesn’t have many comprehensive campaign mods. That being said, the Baldur’s Gate 3 community is quite a bit larger than that of Divinity’s.
It might be nothing but a fantasy, but who doesn’t want to join Hrothgar’s expedition and take down Belhifet, or play as Gorion’s Ward and destroy Sarevok? He already has a model and everything. There’s a lot of excitement about the possibilities of the Baldur’s Gate 3 toolkit, but only time will tell if reality can catch up to the speculation.
