The Plucky Squireis a pretty linear game, literally paced and structured as a storybook. You’ll need to go through each page in a specific order to proceed, and you’re rarely given the opportunity to stray far from the beaten path. However, one way that you can switch up and customize Jot is by using badges.

The mysterious shopkeeper will manage to make their way to various locations throughout the game, selling art scrolls, but more importantly, badges. There are only a few to get throughout the game, so which are the best, which should you get first, and when should you upgrade them?

4Jump Attack

When faced with the choice of three new abilities to add to Jot’s arsenal, one that stands out for being quite unique is the Jump Attack. This technique is described as letting you end your jumps with an attack to land, which sounds like it could be useful in certain scenarios.

The problem is that there are very few situations where this is the optimal move for Jot to use, and since this ability is quite slow and finicky to use, it’s usually better to try any other technique. The main issue holding Jump Attack back is accuracy, since compared to the other techniques, it’s pretty tricky to aim, and if you miss, you’re opening yourself up to enemy attacks.

Jump Attack Upgrade

If you like the sound of using Jump Attack, and it’s the first ability you unlock in the game, then it’s worth considering upgrading it.Each of the abilities in The Plucky Squirecan be upgraded three times, and the Jump Attack is no different.

After unlocking it, try it out a few times and see if it is the kind of ability you enjoy using and can weave into your combat style. If it is, then upgrade it since it will deal more damage, and you can more effectively take out enemies in an AOE, but if you aren’t a fan, then it’s best to accept your loss and not waste any more bulbs on it.

3Spin Attack

The ability that can be most closely tied to The Plucky Squire’sclear Zelda inspirations, the spin attack, will need to be charged using your left trigger, and the longer you charge it, the longer you’ll be spinning and dealing damage.

The later you get into The Plucky Squire, the bigger the hordes of enemies you’ll be dealing with, so if you unlock this ability around the mid-game, then you’ll be perfectly equipped to deal with the groups of enemies that could otherwise overwhelm you.

Spin Attack Upgrade

If you unlock this ability in mid-game, then you should have the perfect amount of currency to have it fully upgraded and ready for the later levels of the game. This is a perfect tool considering how the final chapters of The Plucky Squire will send massive waves of enemies against Jot and friends, and this is the perfect ability to thin the crowd.

It’s recommended that this ability be fully upgraded in time for Chapter 9 since this is the section of the game that will have thebrawniest groups of enemies, and a fully upgraded spin attack is the perfect way to counter them.

2Sword Throw

Out of all the new abilities available for Jot at the beginning of The Plucky Squire, the one you’ll want to get first is the Sword Throw. This ability will prove to be massively useful as Jot’s only ranged attack, and by the late game, there will be some areas that you won’t be able to progress through unless you’ve unlocked it.

It’s recommended to get Sword Throw as early as possible since perfecting it can be a little tricky. Once Jot’s sword is thrown, he won’t be able to use normal attacks, so it’s best to use the lower stakes of the early game to practice throwing the sword and retrieving it to verify you have the ability honed for later in the game.

Sword Throw Upgrade

You will want to invest in upgrading the Sword Throw ability as soon as possible. A few enemies in the later levels can only be taken down using this technique. They’re usually weak, so if you have this ability leveled up, then you can take them down in just one hit if you’re accurate enough.

If you’re low on health, then Sword Throw is also a good way to deal the final blow to an enemy that you want to keep some distance from. This is the weakest ability at its base level, so powering it up is well worth doing to make it viable later in the game.

1Sword Damage Upgrade

It’s basic, but the badge you’ll want to get whenever you see it available is the upgrade for your regular attack. Your standard sword attacks are going to carry you through most encounters thanks to their simplicity, so making them as powerful as possible just makes sense.

You’ll be drip-fed the three upgrades for this attack throughout the early game, so ensure to claim them as soon as you can. This is the best way to scale your attack power to match the enemies, otherwise you’ll find yourself needing to spend extra time taking down enemies with more health.
