In Age of Mythology: Retold, the god you choose can determine your fate in a match. Unfortunately, not all gods are equally balanced. While each has its strengths and weaknesses, some gods have strengths that outweigh their weaknesses. Your god powers, research upgrades, and timing for attacks or defenses are all crucial factors in determining whether you win or lose.

Regardless of their tier, each god offers a unique divine experience, so enjoying the god you choose is just as important as their tier ranking. Here is a tier list guide we’ve prepared, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each god.

Player inspects Hades' lore in compendium in Age of Mythology - Retold.

Basis Of This God Tier List

This tier list is initiallyfocused on major godsand does not include minor gods. Since major and minor gods are categorized differently, and thepower levels of minor gods in later ages differ from those in earlier ages, it would be unfair to mix them in the same tier list.

Additionally, this tier listemphasizes the inherent abilities and god powersof the gods rather than their minor god selections. Therefore, the minor gods you choose can enhance or diminish the power of the major god you play. Keep in mind that enemy gods, the map you’re playing on, and the game mode can also affect your experience with the chosen god, for better or worse.

Player inspects Zeus and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

S-Tier Gods

Zeus

None ofZeus' abilities are useless. His ability togenerate extra favor and have myth units take up less populationspace is already effective. In addition, Greek human units are generally stronger than those of other pantheons. Zeus' heroes also have high hitpoints, making him an excellent choice.

His infantry dealing50 percent more damage to buildingsrewards offensive moves. Lastly, the Bolt god power is great for eliminating troublesome myth units in enemy armies.

Player inspects Hades and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

Hades

One of the most effective units in the Greek pantheon is undoubtedly the Toxotes, and what putsHadesin the S Tier is his ability to make them even deadlier. Hades already increases their range, and if you choose minor gods withresearch upgrades that further boost Toxotes, your enemies will dread facing them.

Additionally, the chance for your fallen units to resurrect as Shades strengthens Hades both defensively and offensively. The Sentinel god power is highly effective, serving as a strong deterrent against early raids. Plus, with the Vaults of Erebus research upgrade, you’ll have no gold shortages.

Player inspects Set and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

Set

Setranks among the most effective gods, largely due to Animals of Set. Sinceanimals have no specific weakness against any unit type, you’re able to constantly pressure enemies with the creatures you convert. Additionally, with an efficient monument setup, you can train Barracks and Migdol Stronghold units at a lower cost.

Set’s god power, Vision, keeps you informed about your enemies’ moves, allowing you to adjust your army and exploit their weak moments. The Clairvoyance research upgrade alsolets you use Vision frequently and cheaply, ensuring you’re always prepared.

Player inspects Poseidon and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

A-Tier Gods

Poseidon

Poseidonis a Greek god focused on cavalry and economy. However, the features he offers aren’t as effective when compared to Zeus and Hades. Despite this, Poseidon is far from being weak. The Militia units make opponents think twice before destroying your buildings. In longer games, theimproved exchange rate from the market gives Poseidon an economic edge.

With Greek units already being highly effective, you can still build a strong army under Poseidon. The Lure god power helps youmanage without farming for a whileby relying on wild animals. However, Poseidon’s research upgrade, Lord of Horses, isn’t very effective, as thesmall regeneration it provides is not significant.

Player inspects Isis and her minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

Isis

Isisis a goddess who can ease your population management concerns, although her true value may not be fully appreciated until the late game. Hermonuments provide protection against enemy god powers, which is a significant disadvantage for your opponents and adds an extra layer of security to your base.

However, you must position your monuments carefully; otherwise, you risk leaving gaps in your defense if their range is not properly optimized. Whileempowered monuments can heal units, this is less crucial if you have a large number of Priests.

Player inspects Odin and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

Isis also grants a slight discount on technology research, and the Flood of the Nile tech provides ongoing food income, though it’s not as effective as Hades' Vaults of Erebus. Lastly, the Prosperity god powerhelps relieve gold shortages, allowing you to research technologies earlier and gain an advantage over your opponents.

Odin

Odin’s god power, Great Hunt, can potentiallyeliminate the need for farmingby ensuring an abundant supply of huntable animals. Your workers will also gather food from hunting faster. With Ravens, you’re able to quickly scout the map and gather relics early.

The Hamask research upgradestrengthens your Berserk units as their health diminishes, making them more formidable. Great Hall units gain more favor in battle, so you’ll heavily rely on your Hersirs and Raiding Cavalry. While Odin’s heroes and human units have slow regeneration, it doesn’t align well with the Norse’s offensive nature due to its low impact.

Player inspects Loki and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

Loki

Loki’s Spy god power, when used effectively, gives you the upper hand by providing crucial insight into enemy movements, highlighting the power of information. A Hersir-heavy army is rewarding for Loki, as you canwear down your enemies with the myth units that spawn. The counter damage dealt by human units and heroes also makes your army even more deadly.

Another key advantage is Loki’s ability toturn your Gatherers and Dwarves into Berserks for free, allowing you to eliminate raiders and strengthen your forces. The Eyes in the Forest research upgrade, providing extra line of sight, further enhances your map control.

Player inspects Thor and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

B-Tier Gods

Thor

Thorexcels at utilizing Dwarves, easing your economy by producing them cheaply. His defining feature is the unique Dwarven Armory.Never neglect armory upgrades, as they ensure you’re ahead in technology compared to your rivals. The longer the game goes on, the stronger your units become thanks to the three extra armory upgrades, boosting both their offense and defense.

Gaining an extra Dwarf with each armory upgrade isn’t game-changing but is a helpful bonus. Additionally, Thor’s god power, Dwarven Mine, can significantlyaid your economy on gold-scarce mapsand in late-game.

Player inspects Freyr and his minor god choices in Age of Mythology - Retold.

Freyr

Freyris a god who can always stay ahead of his rivals economically, but due to theslow research of upgrades, you must constantly be working on them. Your Hill Fort buildings and units produced from them will be offensively strong. Gullinbursti is a highly effective god power with the potential to prevent nasty surprises on the defensive side.

Freyr’s research upgrade, Freyr’s Gift, is excellent, increasing the hitpoints of all units.By stacking this with other hitpoint-focused upgrades, you can produce incredibly tanky units. If you support these with upgrades like Valkyrie or Feasts of Renown, you will have a near-indestructible army.

Freyr’s access to minor gods unavailable to other Norse gods further enhances his versatility. However, the ability to repair buildings for free and have your workers repair them is not particularly impactful.

Kronos

Kronos’s Time Shift ability tomove buildings is a crucial featurefor making your sieges more effective, allowing you to relocate buildings strategically to protect your Citizens. The feature ofreceiving two myth units instead of onewhen advancing ages, triggered three times, isn’t particularly remarkable.

The 20 percent refund on the cost of destroyed siege and myth units is a decent economic bonus but isn’t very significant. Deconstruction is a strong god power forremoving critical enemy buildingsand enhancing your sieges. While Kronos’s access to powerful myth units from minor god choices makes him notably strong among Atlantean gods, he isn’t as standout compared to other gods.

C-Tier Gods

Ra

Unfortunately,Rais not as effective a choice compared to other Egyptian gods, which is why his place on the tier list is low. His god powerspeeds up everyone’s farms, but it accelerates yours more. However, in some games, you might have so many hunting options that the game ends without the need for farming.

Skin of the Rhino is an upgrade meant to protect Laborers, but it’s not extremely effective. Ra’sMigdol Stronghold units have higher hitpoints, which can make him slightly more effective in the late game.

Additionally, Priests can empower monuments, and empowered monuments can empower nearby buildings, forcing you toplace them strategically. The most effective approach with Ra is to rush through the ages faster than your opponents.

Gaia

Gaiaisn’t considered a highly effective god;making her work well depends on your economy. If your economy is strong, you can build a solid army equipped with good research upgrades. Promoting Citizens cheaply is not a game-changing feature. On the other hand, thelow cost of economic upgrades is a nice benefitand can reward early offensive moves.

The Lush effect from your buildings, combined with other healing effects, becomes effective. The Channels research upgrade will speed up units moving on Lush, but its usefulness is debatable since you won’t always be stationed at your base. Gaia’s Forest god power is not particularly effective andbecomes less relevant on maps with abundant forests.

Oranos

Oranosis notable for two key features. First,Sky Passage buildings are invaluable for both defense and offense, providing crucial protection for your Citizens. Second, Shockwave is an inexpensive and effective god power for scattering enemy units, regardless of the age.

However, apart from these standout abilities, Oranos isn’t particularly effective overall. Besides the line of sight and briefly revealing damaged enemies, there are no additional features that significantly enhance his performance in battle or economy.
