Hersir units in line formation in Age of Mythology: Retold.

8Hersir

The Norse Heroes

Hersir units are incredibly versatile and offer you many benefits outside just being a strong deterrent to enemy myth units. Like other Norse military units, Hersirs can also construct and repair buildings, and they also generate plenty of favor when engaged in combat.

While the Norse might find themselves on the backfoot when it comes to favor generation when compared to other cultures, Hersir also generate favor just from being in your army when not in combat as well. This passive generation is critical for your runs, so don’t overlook these heroes.

Perseus carrying the head of medusa leading an army in Age of Mythology: Retold.

7Perseus

The Slayer Of Medusa

Greek heroes are legendary and storied individuals, and Perseus is no exception. His feat in slaying the monster Medusa is represented in the game by his unique skill that allows him to petrify enemy myth units by lifting the head of Medusa for all to see.

This ability is very potent when timed correctly, as you can turn a whole army of myth units into solid stone in the blink of an eye. As a trade-off, however, Perseus has the lowest individual attack stat of all the Greek heroes, so plan accordingly.

A contingent of atlantean troops and heroes in Age of Mythology: Retold.

6Atlantean Heroes

Heroes For Every Occasion

Atlantis has a unique hero system and doesn’t train and build hero units like other cultures do. Atlantean heroes are instead promoted from normal units and retain their original characteristics while gaining heroic ones on top of them.

This allows you to tailor your heroes to whatever strategy you are planning. You can even ‘hero-ify’ your citizens, giving them a work-speed boost and making them quite effective at fending off enemy myth unit attacks.

Pharaoh empowering a granary in Age of Mythology: Retold.

5The Pharaoh

The God-King Of Egypt

Regardless of what god you select at the start, you will always start with a pharaoh unit. Pharaohs are incredibly powerful and useful units, serving multiple functions as well as just being powerful and great at killing myth units.

They can increase the function of your buildings as well as construction speed, making them helpful at home as well on the battlefield. If killed in combat, pharaohs will eventually respawn at your town center, not requiring you to rebuild them yourself.

Heroes of Ragnarok being created in Age of Mythology: Retold.

4Heroes Of Ragnarok

Apocalyptic Warriors

When the world runs the risk of ending and Ragnarok is upon you, these heroes will rise and take up arms against your foes en masse. By using the god power of Baldr, you can target a group of your gatherers and dwarves and turn them into these heroic units with a single click.

The Heroes of Ragnarok are both faster and stronger than Hersirs, making them even better at fighting myth units and regular troops. Even more potent is the fact that you can create a swarm very quickly, allowing you to overwhelm your opponents in no time at all.

Bellerophon rearing back on his pegasus in Age of Mythology: Retold.

3Bellerophan

Mounted Fury

What’s better than a hero that has a powerful ability and strong attack value? A hero that has a powerful ability, strong attack value, AND rides a pegasus into combat. Bellerophan is one of the hardest hitting Greek heroes in the game and makes a great pickup for Zeus players.

His unique skill, Pegasus Charge, allows him to leap into combat and even behind enemy lines from afar, causing tons of damage and chaos for your opponents to deal with. Once you reach the Mythic Age, train this unit as fast as you can.

The Argo floating on the water in Age of Mythology: Retold.

2The Argo

Heroes On The High Seas

Another Greek unit, the Argo, is the only heroic naval unit in the game, offering you the opportunity to combat other naval myth units with your navy rather than on the shore. Being the only nautical hero makes the Argo crucial for any strategy involving the water, provided you have access to it.

Only worshipers of Aphrodite can research the technology required to make the Argo, and Aphrodite is only available to playerswho pick Poseidon or Hadesas their major god. Keep all these factors in mind if you plan to play on a water-heavy map.

The Son of Osiris in battle in Age of Mythology: Retold.

1Son Of Osiris

God In Human Form

By far, the most powerful hero unit in the game is the Son of Osiris, a special upgrade to the Egyptian Pharaoh only available to players who begin to worship Osiris. This falcon-headed wonder offers all the benefits of a pharaoh, but with greatly increased stats and a devastating chain-lighting attack.

The caveat to the Son of Osiris, other than the fact that he’s slow moving, is that players receive a notification when he is created, making him a massive target for your enemies to plan around and focus on. Make sure he is supported well, and don’t give your foes the chance to take him out.
