One of the greatest strengths ofMetaphor: ReFantaziois the amount of customisation available for each of your party members. For every party member, you can completely break down how they play by manipulating the archetype system to best suit your vision for each one of them.

However, aside from the protagonist, every other party member has a set stat distribution, meaning that you’re able to adapt them to different roles, but some of them will be better suited to different roles than others. This means there is a wide selection of different optimal party compositions available to switch up the three variable slots in your party.

Early-Game

After adding Heismay, you’ll have your first properly filled-out party (if we conveniently overlook Grius), and this is what you’ll be stuck with until your fifth party member joins. However, for this early in the game, the combination of Strohl, Hulkenberg, and Heismay works well.

For this section in the story, it’s best to focus on using the protagonist and Strohl as your main damage output and use Hulkenberg’s Knight abilities for support. Heismay’s role is a little more flexible sincethe Thief archetypeis best as a secondary class, but if you want him to deal good bonus damage, using the Merchant archetype for him suits well.

Mid-Game

Unfortunately for Heismay, as soon as you get the chance to bench him, it’s usually going to end up being his fate. Junah is a much more flexible character to build, thanks to her mask-switching primary archetype; the Masked Dancer.

Because of Junah’s high magic stats, you’re going to want her to either specialize in magic damage if the protagonist is more of a support role or as a support (Faker is the best option for her) if the protagonist is filling the magic damage role. Strohl and Hulkenberg will remain doing what they do best, with Strohl working his way up the Warrior lineage, and Hulkenberg as a support Knight to help keep the team alive.

All Bases Covered

If you’ve built Junah to focus more on supporting the team, then replacingHulkenberg with Euphais a great way to cover all of your bases once the Mustari priestess joins the party. Similarly to Junah, since it’s recommended to use Eupha as a summoner, she is pretty flexible within the team, but she shines best in dealing high amounts of magic damage.

Without Hulkenberg’s defenses, you’ll need to ensure that the remaining party members have enoughbuffing and healing skillsto keep the whole team alive, but by this point in the game, you should have enough of the archetype tree unlocked to make this possible.

Double Support

If you have your protagonist built to focus on strength and physical attacks, then this is the best method for filling out the rest of your team. For this team composition, you’ll want to specialize Hulkenberg and Junah into support roles, with the Knight or Commander lineage being the best for Hulkenberg and with Junah using the Faker lineage alongside her Masked Dancer archetype.

With Eupha, you’ll want to ensure that she has unlocked a good pool of summons to fill in the gaps for the damage types that your protagonist doesn’t have access to. The best way for this team composition to get the party through the mid to late-game is to strongly lean into each of their roles to get the best results.

Heavy Hitters

Once you’ve unlocked Basilio, you’ll likely not want to take him out of the party. The Berserker is one of the strongest lineages available, and Basilio has some of the best stats to support this role. On top of this, the Paripus is easy to slot into any team composition since his skills don’t require much specific support to be effective.

However, one of the best ways to build a team around Basilio, especially if your protagonist is focused on magic damage, is to use Strohl and Hulkenberg. With both Strohl and Basilio, you may cover all of the bases when it comes to physical damage, and Hulkenberg can provide support to help boost their damage. The only requirement for this party composition to get the best results is that the protagonist will need to be built to deal magic damage and also will need access to most elements since Strohl and Basilio will only have access to a few elemental attacks each.

Perfect Play

Arguably the best party composition you’ll have access to in Metaphor: ReFantazio is the combination of Hulkenberg, Junah, and Basilio. This is one of the best options because it fully leans into the intended roles of each of the included party members.

Hulkenberg will go all in on support, buffing, and occasionally healing, Junah will be debuffing while also using magic attacks when she has the chance, and Basilio is all about the big physical attack damage. This team works best if the protagonist is dealing magic damage, but this team is flexible enough that it can suit any direction you’ve chosen for building the hero.
