If you’ve ever wondered what happens when cute woodland creatures are given firearms,Squirrel With a Gunis the game for you. As expected, the indie collect-a-thon shooter gives you the opportunity to become a firearm-wielding rodent. However, you’re not limited to one gun.
No, your squirrel can access an entire arsenal. It’s never explained why the idyllic suburban neighborhood has enough firearms for a small army, but your weaponry’s origins aren’t your concern. Instead, you’ll want to focus on finding the right weapons for your needs. In this neighborhood, anything goes, although you’ll want to optimize your rodent’s loadout for boss fights.
7Sniper Rifle
As part of an ever-growing line ofabsurdly fun head-scratching games, Squirrel With a Gun gives its rodent protagonist plenty of weaponry. Some, like thesniper rifle, are incredibly powerful. As you’d expect, the sniper rifle focuses onhigh damage and pinpoint accuracy.
However, its accuracy is its downfall, sincethe sniper rifle’s zoomed in scope severely limits your field of view, leaving plenty of room for other enemies to attack. You’ll rarely need absolute accuracy outside of boss battles, anyhow. It’s a fun diversion, but the sniper rifle is far from the best weapon your rodent can find.
6Shotgun
It’s not unreasonable for someone living in the suburbs to own a break-action shotgun. It’s a run-of-the-mill hobby and home defense weapon, so it’s only logical that you’ll get your little paws on one. However, your squirrel may be disappointed with the results.
Despite theirhigh damage and spread, shotguns lack accuracy, range, and ammo capacity. Most have only two rounds, although some rare variants have up to seven. Notably, a close-range headshot may not kill your target. Instead, it will send them into a flurry of ragdoll movement, blocking your chance for a clean finishing blow.
5Rocket Launcher
You’d expect arocket launcher to be an overpowered beast, but things are different when you’re a squirrel. Without pockets to hold ammo and mass to prevent intense recoil, a rocket launcher is a glass cannon. Predictably, these weapons stilldeal massive damage across a relatively small area of effect. However, you only get one shot.
The rocket launcher is a late-game weapon. You won’t have much use for it outside of where you’ll find it, although it can be a useful tool during boss fights.
There are limited optimal uses for rocket launchers. Some groups of enemies are best dispatched or distracted by this ragdoll-inducing powerhouse, but it’s usually a poor choice for direct combat. Considering your in-game status as a squirrel, you’ll also face massive recoil.
4Pistol And Revolver
The standard pistol is one of your best friends. It offers the perfect balance ofdamage, accuracy, and ammo capacity. You’ll get some recoil, but it’s not dramatic enough to send your rodent protagonist flying. While it’s not thebestpick for large groups of enemies, a pistol can handily thin a wave of oncoming agents, leaving their weapons open for little paws.
Later, you’ll encounter a cowboy-stylesix-shot revolver. Its slightly smaller ammo capacity is offset byincreased damage potential. There’s slightly more recoil per shot, but that’s not a functional dealbreaker. Ultimately, the Wild West weapon is essentially a delightful reskin of the pistols you’ll find scattered throughout squirrely suburbia.
3Grenade Launcher
While a rocket launcher may be a bittoo powerful for a little squirrel, grenade launchersare surprisingly versatile. These handy weapons come withsix shots each, offeringconsiderable splash damage with a decent reach. Grenade launchers are more prolific in the first half of the game, and they’re best used to clear small groups of pesky enemies.
Functionally, grenade launchers can be a gamble. Each shot follows an arc, soaim carefully. Otherwise, you may accidentally blow yourself awaywith your enemies. Keep track of the distance between yourself and your targets, too. While you have a surprising reach, the grenade launcher’s range is far from infinite.
2SMG And LMG
Both thesubmachineandlight machine gunsare functionally identical. LMGs are slightly longer and rarer, but they’ll blow your enemies away as efficiently as their smaller counterparts. Both weapons have plenty of bullets, and you’ll getdecent damage per shot. You’ll want to find one whenever you face waves of enemies or tough boss fights.
However, machine guns have a second function in Squirrel With a Gun. As a tiny rodent, you’ll get a predictably massive recoil from these weapons. In combat, that can be a liability. Fortunately, your squirrel will also facemany platforming challenges, andmachine guns give you a massive amount of extra jumping power.
1Unarmed
Ultimately, one of the best ways to start any fight iswithout a weapon at all. It sounds counter-intuitive, but an unarmed squirrel can adapt to any situation. While you won’t get any ranged attacks, you may pick up fallen weapons or grab nearby garbage to throw at enemies. Alternatively, you can sneak up and perform a quick neck snap to thin a large crowd.
Being unarmed also offersa few tactical perks. When unarmed, you can climb unaware enemies or climb to higher ground. There, you’ll usually find hidden weapons or useful throwable items to arm your squirrel. When all else fails, you can always run away, which is much easier without the added weight of a weapon.
