Summary
Over the years, the Star Wars universe has played host to dozens of video games, allowing diehard fans to dive into their favorite worlds and characters firsthand. However, these experiences disproportionately revolved around immersing you in the Jedi power fantasy, leaving many elements of the property untouched in the digital space.
Ubisoft Massive’sStar Wars Outlawshopes to satiate those who want more than just lightsaber duels and convoluted lore about the Force, offering an open-world adventure where you take on the galaxy’s criminal underworld. In many ways, the game is a success, fleshing out an oft-overlooked portion of the Star Wars canon, but in others, it can leave you scratching your head.
5The Teleporting Speeder
It’s Behind Me, Isn’t It?
Within the first few hours of the Outlaws campaign, Kay acquires a speeder she can use to traverse open landscapes. It’s an invaluable asset when she needs to travel to distant map markers, and can get her out of sticky situations quickly. However, its presence doesn’t always make sense within the context of the world.
When the speeder is summoned, it will always appear right behind her. This can create some silly moments, like Kay finishing a mission deep in Imperial territory only for her ride to emerge from the area she just fought her way through. It becomes a bit odd for the speeder to always find its way to Kay, especially when the story bends over backwards to explain how secure an enemy stronghold is.
4Kay’s Complete Inability To Hold Onto Weapons
Butterfingers!
Throughout the narrative, Kay is shown to be a good thief, deftly navigating a life of crime and dodging unwanted attention. You would think that would mean Kay would do a good job of holding onto her own property, but alas, that is not the case.
As she travels to different planets, she has the opportunity to pick up and loot the discarded items of NPCs such as weapons. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to carry them for too long, dropping them when encountering even the slightest inconvenience. Kay’s chronic case of butterfingers comes off a bit goofy when considering how competently she manages high-pressure heists and running from the authorities, but it could speak to her commitment to the scoundrel lifestyle, discarding any items as soon as they’ve outlived their usefulness to her.
3The Empire Constantly Forgetting Kay’s Wanted Status
When Kay commits crimes in the presence of the Empire (fighting, stealing, trespassing in restricted areas), she’ll build up her Wanted level, being pursued by stormtroopers and eventually death troopers if she continues antagonizing the Imperial regime. Thankfully, she can quell the onslaught in numerous ways, including running from the scene of the crime or paying off corrupt officers.
Over the course of the game, Kay will be hunted by the law numerous times, and it’s hard to ignore how the Empire has one woman constantly popping up as public enemy number one, only for the manhunts to end after a few minutes. Stormtroopers should be constantly searching for Kay, trying to bring her in and stop her supposed reign of terror. She’s able to escape each and every time though due to her excellent stealth skills, only to be caught once more and begin the process anew.
2Kay’s Reputation Never Truly Ruins Her Relationship With The Syndicates
They’ll Always Have Work For Her
The Empire isn’t the only group Kay has to look out for as she explores the galaxy; the variouscrime syndicates will attack her if she gets on their bad side. There are many obvious ways to tank her reputation, including killing cartel members, but there are often situations where it seems like a crime boss shouldn’t know Kay’s done something to hurt them.
For example, the main story gives Kay opportunities to double-cross certain syndicates, potentially turning valuable items over to another syndicate or stealing from them without their knowledge. In situations like this, Kay’s reputation with the people she sides against will always go down, even if the betrayed party never acknowledges her misdeeds.
Kay also seems to have an incredible amount of leeway with every crime boss. She can brawl with their thugs and trespass on their property, yet will still be offered jobs all the time. It feels like Kay’s relationship with the syndicates is never in true jeopardy, even though she is constantly stabbing them in the back.
1Kay Will Not Hurt NPCs
GTA This Is Not
Despite being a criminal, Kay’s disregard for the law only goes so far. This means thatshe will not hurt or kill neutral NPCs, instead only shooting her blaster at Imperials and syndicate thugs.
With that in mind, it feels a bit out of character when she threatens people at gunpoint in multiple cutscenes. It directly contrasts with how she handles herself in most other situations, only using violence as a last resort or in self-defense. It shows that Kay is willing to use force to get what she wants, but that dark side of hers isn’t reflected in her day-to-day interactions.
