Summary
Black Myth: Wukongis out now onPCandPlayStation 5, having givenXbox Series X/Sa miss at launch. It wasreportedthat this port was delayed for optimisation purposes, and this isn’t too surprising - it’s a very visually stunning game and one that many fear will struggle onXbox Series S.
Turns out, those fears are not unfounded. Digital Foundry has simulated how the game might run on the Series S, using a PC with the same specs as the console. Even with graphical downgrades, we can see that Black Myth: Wukong struggles to reach 30fps in areas, dipping as low as 18fps at some point.
Digital Foundry includes a section on a hypothetical Xbox port in itstechnical review of Black Myth: Wukong. While this isn’t a perfect comparison - as they highlight, the PC they’re using has more memory than an Xbox Series S - it does give us a fair idea of what compromises will have to be made, and there’s a fair amount here.
Fans Are Worried About The Black Myth: Wuking Xbox Series S Port
As seen in this segment of the review, Xbox Series S-level tech is struggling to cope with the visuals of Black Myth: Wukong. Digital Foundry notes that Game Science might be reluctant to downgrade the graphics too severely since these visuals were such a selling point on other platforms.
Right now, there is no release date for Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X/S. We know that Xbox requires all games released on Series X to be playable with the same features on Series S, only allowing studios to make cuts to the performance and visuals on the weaker console.
Xbox has suggested that Black Myth: Wukong’s unavailability on its consoles isdue to a “deal” with Sony, but it has not explicitly confirmed this.
A rare exception to this wasBaldur’s Gate 3, which waseventually allowed to drop couch co-op for Series S, but kept it on Series X. This came after developerLariantried to get the feature to work on Series S, but was unable to, leading Xbox to eventually concede andmake the game available on its consolesmonths after it launched on PC and PlayStation 5.
With Black Myth: Wukong, however, the issue is the performance. It remains to be seen if Game Science can get the game working on Series S, and if Microsoft intervenes to help get the port off the ground.
