Summary
It started with a simple request, and it has since reverberated throughout the gaming community.
A few days ago, Caleb, a 37-year-old disabled veteran diagnosed with Stage 4 cancerasked the Borderlands subreddit if there was any way that he could get into contact with Gearbox. With his cancer spreading rapidly, Caleb had been given between 7 and 12 months to live, and if chemotherapy proved successful, then fewer than two overall. Knowing he may not be around forthe recently revealed Borderlands 4, Caleb shot his shot into the ether.
What happened next is the type of power that the gaming community can have. His post has since topped over 18,000 likes and several hundred comments of well-wishes and people trying to fulfill his wish.
Caleb’s Wish Will Come True
Shortly after Caleb’s post went viral, Gearbox’s own Randy pitchford took to Twitter to let fans know that he was aware of the superfan’s wish. In a post on Wednesday, Pitchford revealed that he and Caleb were “chatting via e-mail,” and said that “we’re going to do whatever we can to make something happen.”
Now,in an updated post on Reddit, Caleb has revealed that Gearbox has something in the works for him. Provided he is healthy, in mid-to-late November, he’ll make his way down to Texas to meet the team at their headquarters. “Thank you to everyone. It means more than words can describe,”Caleb wrote in his post.
Not only will Caleb’s wish seemingly come true, butgamers across the globe banded together to help smash the goal of his GoFundMe page. As of this writing, over $11,000 has been raised, far exceeding the original goal of $9,000. The funds will go to medical and travel expenses, as well as food due to his required specialized liquid diet.
