Summary
Paweł Sasko, associate game director of the in-development sequel toCyberpunk 2077, admits that some people may never be convinced that CD Projekt has learned from its mistakes regarding the game’s disastrous launch. He resolves that words won’t convince anyone, the studio will just have to prove its claims with upcoming projects.
“It might be a situation that never happens for some of them,” Sasko toldEurogamer. “But that’s unfortunately the price we have to pay for what happened. But I hope that, throughout the work that we are doing, throughout the things that we are showing, we can actually win some of these people around - and when they hear someone talking to them about the incredible experiences they can have in, let’s say Phantom Liberty, or the next Witcher, next Cyberpunk, or next Hadar [CDPR’s unannounced new IP], at the moment when they see there’s that incredible value in the game, they will actually reach out for it, play it and enjoy it.”
CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski calls the controversial launch of Cyberpunk 2077 “one of the worst moments of [his] life,” adding that one of the long-lasting effects of the Cyberpunk 2077 situation is that the perception of the company has been damaged in the eyes of players, and that’s something that may never return.
Comeback of the Century
Cyberpunk 2077’s launch was plagued by technical issues and bugs, especially on consoles. The fallout from the event was enough to tank the share price of CD Projekt and is considered a black mark in the history of the studio. Thankfully, the team has put in extensive work over the past two years to improve Cyberpunk 2077, shifting the public perception of the game in a more positive direction.
Last year’s Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 launched to a far better reception than its base game, attracting plaudits from fans and critics alike. Our own Andrew King said the expansion made Cyberpunk 2077 into the best game it could be in his4/5 review.
