Summary

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster’s director, Ryosuke Murai, has confirmed that the developers used planning documents and beta builds to restore content that was cut from the original 2006 game.

For the most part,Dead Rising’s recently-released remake (or “Deluxe Remaster” as Capcom calls it) is a very faithful re-release of the 2006 classic that captures what made that game so iconicwhile introducing a few quality-of-life changesandtoning down the difficulty in a few areas. It does have a few interesting additions, though, that call back to the game’s development history.

When Deluxe Remaster was first revealed, fans were quick to noticethat some of the male zombie cops now shoot at Frank if he passes them, which was originally going to be a feature in the 2006 release. There are a few other instances of cut content being added back into the game, such as the rocket launcher, which the game’s director has now confirmed comes from studying the game’s development.

While speaking to TheGamer atTokyo Game Show, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster’s director Ryosuke Murai explained how some of the game’s new content came to be. Specifically, he confirmed that the team looked at features that were included in “planning documents”, “early builds”, and “internal game design documentation” and decided to bring them back.

The most notable example of this is the policemen with guns, which Murai points out were “cut from the game for some reason”. Murai noted that the team wanted to recreate the concept of zombies “mindlessly repeating the job or actions” they had while alive and that it made sense for the zombie cops specifically to shoot Frank.

We wanted to recreate the concept that the zombies were mindlessly repeating the job or the actions they had while they were alive, and it made total sense to us that the zombie policement would be taking out their guns and trying to shoot Frank. - Ryosuke Murai

Murai also commented on the rocket launcher being added to the game, saying that it was put in there so that veteran players would have some “new surprises” waiting for them instead of just replaying the same game. When deciding what was the “most fun weapon” that could be added, the team landed on the rocket launcher as it was the coolest thing they thought players could find.
