Summary

Over the past year or two, the quality of the video game to TV/movie adaptation pipeline has increased greatly. Shows likeThe Last of UsandFalloutbucked the historical trend of these adaptations being bad, with both being nominated for dozens of industry awards, and movies likeThe Super Mario Bros. MovieandSonic the Hedgehoghave been box office hits.

It’s this renaissance that led me to ask theDead Rising Deluxe Remasterteam atTokyo Game Showwhether they would consider making a new adaptation of the once-dormant series.

“A Live-Action Zombie Movie Would Be The Coolest Thing”

Historically, theDead Risingseries has been no stranger to movie adaptations. Between 2010 and 2016, three movies were released: Zombrex: Dead Rising Sun, Dead Rising: Watchtower, and Dead Rising: Endgame. Each of these movies was panned, with Dead Rising: Watchtower receiving thehighest Rotten Tomatoes score- 32.

However, with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster performing well critically and public sentiment changing towards adaptations, I posed the question, “Would you make another movie, or maybe an anime, of Dead Rising now that it’s back?” to Capcom’s trio of Kawata-san, Morimoto-san, and Murai-san, a question that excited game director Ryosuke Murai.

“I would certainly enjoy that,” he told me, adding, “Speaking as my opinion personally, I think that it could also be suitable for an anime, but that’s an unusual approach. Ultimately, I think that a live-action zombie movie would be the coolest thing to make out of Dead Rising.”

Murai-san pointed me to another project the team had worked on, somewhat in the vein of an anime, with ananimated Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster promotional music videouploaded to Capcom’s YouTube channel.

Speaking to TheGamer at Tokyo Game Show, the Deluxe Remaster team also shared how they’d like thenext game to be set on a cruise ship, the reason “a lot of people bounced” from the original game, and how theyused beta documents to restore cut content.
