Summary
It didn’t take cheaters long to startruining Deadlock for everyone. However,Valveis a bit more on the ball here than it is with its other online games, as it rolls out a new update that focuses on keeping games fair. Better yet, it’s even letting players decide what happens to any cheaters who get caught.
Now that the new update is live, anyone playing in a match with a cheater will be allowed to decide their fate: instantly ban them, or turn them into a frog. Yes, the latter option really does transform players into an amphibian, which seemingly makes them useless in a fight - very much the opposite of what they were trying to accomplish.
Deadlock Cheaters Are Being Turned Into Frogs
As reported byGamesRadar, players quickly noticed this unique anti-cheat deterrent in the new Deadlock update. We can even see it in action already, as a player uselessly hops around, apparently unable to fight back.
Turns out that yes, this is official and in thepatch notes. “When a user is detected as cheating, during the game session the opponents will be given a choice between banning the user immediately and ending the match or turning the cheater into a frog for the rest of the game and then banning them afterwards,” the notes read.
“The system is set to conservative detection levels as we work on a v2 anti-cheat system that is more extensive. We will turn on the banning of users in a couple of days after the update is out. When a match is ended this way, the results will not count for other players.”
I’m sure many players would like to see similar attention given to Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2. They have beenoverrun by cheatersfor some time, with fans constantly asking Valve for help.
So, as long as the game is able to detect cheaters, this sounds like a win for everyone. If the match ends, both the enemies and allies of the cheater seemingly won’t suffer. It might suck for those on the same team as the cheater if it’s decided that the match will continue with their teammate as a frog, though. That sounds like a very hard game to come back from.
The best part is that the cheater will be gone either way, getting banned at the end of their frog match. So really, this just adds a way to get back at them before the inevitable happens, which I’m sure many players will find cathartic.
