Summary

The long-rumouredDeath Notegame has been revealed as a social deduction game that’s included on PlayStation Plus at launch - Death Note: Killer Within.

As my fellow Dragon Ball nerds are well aware of, anime fans have been absolutelyeatingover the past year or so. Ignoring a few misses like Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash and Demon Slayer’s strange Mario Party clone, there have been a ton of big releases, from Sparking Zero andNaruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connectionsto upcominggames like Hunter x Hunter Nen x Impact and Bleach: Brave Souls.

It seems like lately, any anime or manga series is on the table when it comes to gaming adaptations. That’s why the rumour that a Death Note game of some kind was in developmentdidn’t sound so far-fetched. Well, we finally know what the trademark was referring to, as Death Note: Killer Within has been officially revealed.

Death Note: Killer Within Is Basically Anime Among Us

The surprise reveal of Killer Within was actually made by PlayStation, who announced it as part of November’s monthly PlayStation Plus games, which it’ll be made available on from its November 5 launch date. Killer Within is uniquely a social deduction game, which makes perfect sense for the world of Death Note.

I was going to make a joke about it obviously not being an arena fighter, but Light did appear in Jump Force, so stranger things have happened.

Killer Within lets one player out of 10 control Kira and judge other players with the Death Note to kill them, while another plays as L and gathers clues to try and discover them before they get away with murder. We’ve only seen a brief glimpse of the gameplay, but it sounds very similar to a Death Note-y version of Among Us.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, more specific details were revealed about how it works. Players have one of four unique player roles, Kira, Kira Follower, L, and the investigator, with the two teams basically being split between Kira’s followers and those helping L. you’re able to choose which you want to be, but it’s also assigned by the game based on who picks what.

During the Action Phase, players can gather clues and complete tasks until a Meeting Phase has everyone voting who should be arrested based on their suspicions. If L is voted out, team Kira wins, but if Kira is caught then Team L wins. Again, it’s basically Imposters versus Crewmates, but with a unique Death Note twist to it all.
