InReverse 1999, time isn’t simply a concept for philosophers to ponder until the end. It is a force being warped and shaped by events known as ‘Storms’. With each storm, time is slowly erasing humans down to their primordial origin of nothingness if nothing is done to stop the storms from wreaking havoc.

That’s why if you’re going to save humans from the storm and fight off the antithesis of your goals, Manus Vindictae, you’ll need to gather plenty of allies to fight them off and figure out what is past the year 1999. So, to bolster your forces, these are some characters who are widely considered to be the cornerstone of DPS and damage.

Dikke full portrait left, in-game model right

10Dikke

Absolutely Average, But Available

The first five-star unit to appear on this list. She isn’t particularly strong, nor is she super adept at healing and mitigating damage. Lady Mikke is an all-around okay character who can synergize with nearly anyone else on the roster. That flaming sword she has isn’t anything to sneeze at, at least in design.

Her major draw here is that she is completely free and a guaranteed addition to your roster once you hit your eighth log-in day. If you don’t have a designated healer, she can fill that role in a pinch until you get one. Dikke is also perfect for filling a secondary DPS spot in your party for extra damage.

9Pickles

The Solitary Good Boy

If the phrase ‘alone, but not lonely’ were to manifest into a sentient creature, it would undoubtedly be Pickles. Even as a young puppy, he was never about the crowd and preferred to question the meaning of existence and how it related to humanity instead of chasing a ball. Pickles hits for significant damage despite being widely considered a support unit.

What draws people in is his incantation Hedonism Implement, which hits two enemies and strips them of any positive status they’ve built up during the fight. If you’re willing to trade off some short-term DPS for a much larger attack later, working him into your party is worth it. His utility comes full circle with his ultimate, Thus Spoke Pickles, which boosts the party’s attack by 30 percent for two turns.

An-An Lee in both detailed art and in-game battle mode

8An-An Lee

Ghost Hunter Extraordinaire

Those of you familiar with Hong Kong cinema, especially Steven Chow movies, recognize An-An for the homage that she is. Her design is a callback to the1995 Horror comedy filmOut of the Dark, which follows a ghost hunter who may or may not be as legitimate as he seems. An-An even equips herself with the same ghost-catching tools, such as her trusty chocolate and plastic wrap.

An-An’s skill set is all about boosting her attack power and that of other party members while dealing with respectable damage. Taoist Rune can hit a single target for up to 350 percent of her total power and inflict a daze status on the enemy, while Lily Nectar boosts both the attack and defense of all allies for up to 30 percent.

Charlie with her signature hat and cape in both chibi and hand drawn form

7Charlie

A Powerhouse Both In Battle And On Stage

Shy, quiet people usually hide the full extent of themselves, saving that for when they’re in a place they trust the most. For Charlie, that place is the stage. She is a descendant of playwright William Shakespeare, and she has fallen in love with plays from the actor’s side of the pen. That passion bleeds over from the stage into battle.

Her skills depend on her status. Tempest to Thee gains more strength below 50 percent (80, if you have P3), while Thunder to Thee does more damage if Charlie has her stats boosted by another effect. Luckily, she’s able to build these up rather quickly.

6Voyager

A Galaxy Contained Through Music

It’s fascinating to find a being who, through no fault of their own, has been deprived of sound as long as they have existed, yet still found their way to music, purely by happenstance, no less. Is it proof that music is a universal language? Maybe not, but with Voyager as she is, you’d have at least some definitive proof.

She uses her cosmic power to control the battlefield by casting silence, sealing their ultimate with her Refrain passive trait, and buffing the allies’ attack and defense with Concerto in D-Fense. The earth, and by extension, our universe, is lucky thatthis cosmic horror beingloves music enough to be entertained. Once bored, it’s possible she could wipe the world out with her Ultimate Galaxy on the Strings.

5Lilya

Fighter Pilot And Warrior

With the global launch of Reverse 1999, fans were quickly introduced to the Russian powerhouse Lilya, who, when paired with crit-heavy units, can clean the field of any enemies. All of her attacks, including her ultimate A Small Trick, are entirely focused on hitting as hard as possible.

The need for Lilya to have a party that boosts her crit rate and overall power creep has sort of left her behind in terms of utility, but that doesn’t mean she can’t still be viable. If built correctly, this soldier will lead you to victory.

4Regulus

An Early Game Unit Turned Secret Weapon

If you are a gacha game connoisseur, then you’re familiar with the trope of early-game units that can become underwhelming as soon as you come out of the tutorial. Regulus bucks that trend with her utility and ability to raise the party’s critical rate every other turn. She’s also adept at stealing moxie with any critical damage she does.

Her ultimate is where she truly shines. Sleepless Rave deals mass damage to all enemies while casting the Conceal effect with her secondary ability, Riot and Roll. As long as the enemy’s next attack isn’t their ultimate, your units will be able to dodge. Regulus is well-rounded enough to play in any party make-up.

Windsong wearing a long brown coat

3Windsong

Fighting With Her Demands Your Full Attention

Windsong is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, she is known for being one of the most hard-hitting DPS characters in the game so far. Her ultimate, Long Long Journey, can take all of her reserve stacks of Rehabilitation and use them all in one attack. It all but guarantees her to instantly kill any target unfortunate enough to get caught in its path.

Yet, the other edge of that sword is the high cost of the power. To get the maximum number of stacks to pull off such high numbers, you’ll have to save your base attacks for several turns instead of letting her auto attack. Resource Management is the name of her game to ensure you don’t lose out on her full potential.

A Knight’s gloves holding his famed sword Durandal

2A Knight

A Moxie Machine

Nothing remains of A Knight outside his hands and his sword. The memories of his previous life? Gone. Answers to the questions about whom or what he is? Lost, through the annals of time. It’s a sad existence, but A Knight makes due by making new friends and annoying them with new jokes.

Both of his regular attacks, even without his Portray being leveled, will stack Moxie with every hit. His ultimate, After AD 778, swings for heavy damage on all enemies while also casting Rousing Morale on the entire party, giving them a 50 percent attack boost.

The songstress Isolde smiles sadly as she waits

1Isolde

The Cursed Vessel

Isolde is the kind of performer who lets herself get lost in the role she’s been given. It’s much more than the method actors you’re used to hearing about. Isolde opens herself up, inviting a spirit to use her body to perform. Experiencing Isolde’s performances is both awe-inspiring and melancholy.

Not only does Isolde cast burn on all enemies by default, but her passive skill also lets all party members in on the fun as well, causing those burns to quickly stack. Her main attacks are serviceable, but her passive attacks are where she shines. After acquiring enough stacks of burn, she automatically unleashes an attack called Intermezzo, which hits hard by ignoring reality defense.
