After ten years of waiting for the nextDragon Agegame, it was easy to look at The Veilguard as something of a finale for the series. Even if we do get another game, it’s unclear when that will be, or what that would even cover given the world-ending stakes that Thedas once again finds itself in.
However, as far asDragon Age: The Veilguard’s director is concerned, there is still more story to tell. John Epler confirmed thison Bluesky, saying that he’ll keep making Dragon Age games for as long as he is allowed.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Director Wants To Keep Making Sequels For As Long As He Can
This was in response to Epler being asked whether or notBioWareviews The Veilguard as a “grand sendoff” to the Dragon Age series. While Epler doesn’t want to speak for everyone else, he makes it clear that he personally does not.
“My current personal sentiment is that if they let me, I’ll be making Dragon Age games until they have to wheel me out in one of those Captain Pike beeping chairs,” he says. That’s a pretty strong “yes” to more Dragon Age sequels then, I’d say, as long as EA allows it.
If the future of Dragon Age rests on the success of The Veilguard, then the series is in a good place right now. EA recently commented thatthe game’s pre-order figures are “within expectations”, and that there’s a “strong demand” for the series. Given thatDragon Age: Inquisitionalso sold incredibly well, another game should be a safe bet, as long as nothing disastrously wrong happens with The Veilguard’s launch on October 31.
Despite this, BioWare is dealing with a lot of pushback from fans right now. It was just confirmed thatworld state imports are being almost completely scrapped,as we’ll only be transferring three decisions that we made in Inquisition. This means that nothing that happened inDragon Age: OriginsandDragon Age 2will be mentioned, and we won’t even be able to say who our Hero of Ferelden and Hawke were. This is the first time a Dragon Age sequel hasn’t allowed this, and it has fans incredibly worried about The Veilguard.
However, as Epler is suggesting here, The Veilguard was never meant to be a grand finale. Maybe older faces will pop up again in future games. But for now, it seems that The Veilguard is going to do its own thing, with its own story and characters.
