Dragon Age: The Veilguardisn’t going to be the direct sequel that many fans were hoping for afterDragon Age: Inquisition. Instead,BioWarehas explained thatvery few choices are being carried over(three, to be exact), so that The Veilguard can focus on its own story and characters. As Trick Weekes, a lead writer on The Veilguard, explains, there will be “things that reward returning players who remember the lore”. While that keeps things pretty vague, it does suggest that The Veilguard isn’t leaving its old fans behind, even as it tries to be as accessible as possible to newcomers.

“You can come to the game having never played aDragon Agegame before (or engaged with any of the tie-in stuff) and be fine,“saysWeekes. “There are things that reward returning players who remember the lore, but like [Dragon Age: Inquisition] itself, it’s intended to be friendly to new players.
They add that anything that requires prior knowledge is explained to new players, likely referring to returning characters like Solas, Varric, and Morrigan. However, the wording opens up the possibility of longtime fans getting some kind of reward for their dedication over all of these years - we’ll just have to wait and see what this is.
The obvious answer would be character cameos or callbacks to our previous decisions, but we already know that this will belargely impossible, and not as impactful.The Veilguard is scrapping the world state system, and will only ask you to input three decisions made in Inquisition: the fate of the Inquisition, what your Inquisitor plans to do with Solas, and who they romanced. That means there are no decisions we can input fromDragon Age: OriginsandDragon Age 2, ruling out a lot of cameos and references since they rely on player choices.
Since two of the three questions we’re asked are Solas-related, fans of the Dread Wolf will be eating good. It’s possible that some closure to his arc is what’s being referred to here since it will be more impactful for returning players.
It remains to be seen how this is pulled off, but we don’t have to wait much longer. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is launching on October 31.
