Up until this point, every game in theDynasty Warriorsseries was numbered, starting with Dynasty Warriors 2 and most recently ending with Dynasty Warriors 9.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins, however, is the first mainline game in the series' history not to include a number in its title.
Speaking to TheGameratTokyo Game Show, Omega Force head and Origins producer Tomohiko Sho shared that there are three core reasons for this change.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins In The First Non-Numbered Game In Series History
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is looking to make some major changes to the game’s core gameplay, one of the three reasons Sho-san cites for the title change.
“I think maybe in the past ten years of the Dynasty Warriors series, since Dynasty Warriors 9 and the more recent games, the tactical part was a little bit on the lower side. It was more focused on action,” Sho-san said, adding, “Compared to the more recent numbered titles, it’s different.”

The game will also focus on a single, nameless character, another reason for the change in naming convention. “Previously, we had lots of officers in the game. Here, we wanted to show the focus on our original protagonist.”
The final reason for the change is attributed to the story, with Sho-san telling me, “In the previous games, we’ve shown the entire Romance of the Three Kingdoms storyline, but in this game, we’re only focusing on the first half of the story, which is up to the Battle of Chibi or the Battle of the Red Cliffs. We’re only telling the origins of the story.”
Alongside details of the name change, Sho-san also told us about the team’splans for a PS5 Pro version, and the challenges they faced getting so many soldiers on screen at once.
