PS5 Pro pre-orders went live todayin the UK, including the hotly-anticipated 30th Anniversary bundle. As you’d expect, they sold out almost immediately asscalpers swept up orders and resold them on eBayfor upward of $10,000. Which some people even added to their baskets!
In response, a user known as x9d_71 listed a PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle for just 99p to lure in would be buyers so they could warn them against paying extortionate prices to scalpers. But that’s not the best part, the listingalso threatens tostealconsoles from scalpers directly before they ever get their hands on the console.
It looks like the listing has since been taken down, but IGN UK news editor Wesley Yin-Poole grabbed a screenshot which you can see below.
“I work for [a] major delivery company that [deals] with console dispatch,” the post states. “I’m telling you now when we get them they are all getting stolen before they arrive at your door.”
We can’t say for certain that this is a legitimate threat. Anyone can create a listing on eBay, and there’s nothing to back up that they work for a “major delivery company” nor do they say what the company is. There’s nothing concrete or identifying in the post whatsoever, so it remains to be seen if they’ll back these words up.
At any rate, it highlights once again just how much of an issue scalping is. The pre-orders queues were extremely long, up to an hour for some, and consoles sold out before most people ever had the chance. Shortly after, the already notoriously expensive PS5 Pro was being listed on third-party sites for unreasonabe prices.
So, either someone is so annoyed that they plan to steal from the scalpers as some kind of vigilante justice, or this is just one of the many potential buyers who are frustrated at the problem going unresolved. Either way, a solution is clearly needed, as the scarcity of limited edition consoles like the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition lends itself to these major scalping operations that are plaguing trade sites like eBay.
