Summary
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdomis a first for the series already. It will be the first time in a mainlineZeldagame that we’repredominately playing as the princess herself, going on an adventure to save Link. So, it’s very fitting that this is also the first mainline Zelda entry to be led by a woman, with Tomomi Sano stepping up as the game’s director.
Nintendojust confirmed that Sano is the first female Zelda director in aninterviewwith the game’s leads. She’s handling coordination between developer Grezzo and Nintendo, ensuring that this unique Zelda game still captures the spirit of the series.
The First Female Director Of A Mainline Zelda Game Is Described As An “Essential Part” Of The Series
Sano has had a long career with Nintendo, joining the company in 2003. In that time, she’s worked as a coordinator, assistant producer, and assistant director on titles such as Mario Party 6, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, and many more.
If you’re wondering why we keep saying “mainline” game, that’s becausethe CD-i game, Zelda’s Adventure, was directed by Anna Roth. That was also the last time Zelda led the adventure.
However, as described in the interview, Sano has also been an “essential part” of the Zelda series. In particular, she’s assisted with the remakes developed by Grezzo, including Ocarina of Time 3D and Twilight Princess HD.
Echoes of Wisdom marks her first time as a game director. Longtime series producer Eiji Aonuma adds that he “almost always” asks to work with Sano on Grezzo projects, which have focussed on remakes so far.
Echoes of Wisdom is set to launch on September 26, exclusively onNintendo Switch.
