As pointed out by Reddit user SpiderKnife, they do this by invading you and then instantly killing endgame bosses in areas you haven’t visited yet, giving you their Rememberances far in advance.
For one, you don’t get a chance to fight the boss yourself, diminishing the payoff of your adventure in the Lands Between, but it can also end certain NPC questlines. It’s hardly ideal,especially with how complex some of those stories are, but there are a couple of things you can do; ALT F4 to close the game the second a suspicious invader enters your world, and back up your save files regularly.
What’s especially egregious is that there are hacking groups opening up on Steam in broad digital daylight that encourage other players to cheat in ways like this, welcoming newcomers to the scene “in pursuit of destroying the hearts of little kids”.
There are conflicting reports about whether it works, but supposedly blocking a player prevents them from invading you, so groups like this might actually be handy for avoiding cheaters.
Elden Ring’s cheating problem is nothing new, and it’s always been worse on PC than consoles, but like a message scrawled before a fog wall, take this as a warning to ensure you’re doing everything you can to prevent those hundreds of hours played from becoming a waste of time.
