Summary
Ghost of Yoteiwas undoubtedly the biggest announcement from Tuesday’s State of Play. The follow-up toSucker Punch’s critically-acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima has many fans excited, but the revelation of a female protagonist has outraged the usual circles, prompting a PlayStation veteran to speak up against Ghost of Yotei’s detractors (thanks,GamesRadar+).
Shawn Layden, previously president and chief executive officer of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, has somesimple advicefor people complaining about Ghost of Yotei’s female lead. “It’s a game. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. In fact, why not make the game you want yourself,” Layden proposes.
He also added that Sucker Punch, a team of creators, believes in the project and wants to create it. The narrative that a studio like Sucker Punch is being forced to pursue projects they’re not passionate about is completely unfounded.
Layden’s comments are in response to apopular thread going around on Xwhere YouTuber Mightykeef referred to a person complaining about Ghost of Yotei’s protagonist being a woman, “a loser.”
Female Japanese Warriors Are Well-Documented
The complaints are nonsensical because warrior women have a deep-rooted history in Japan, there is historical evidence of female warriors fighting in the Kamakura and Sengoku periods. Even if these indisputable historical facts did not exist, acting like you’re able to’t take creative liberties in fiction is willfully obtuse.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in 1579, faced some of the same criticisms with the announcement of its dual protagonists Yasuke, a black samurai, and Naoe, a female shinobi. Despite Yasuke being a real person and the aforementioned points about female warriors applying to Naoe, there were still absurd complaints about these characters.
Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603 in Hokkaido, 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. You play as Atsu, a female ronin called ‘The Ghost’ on a quest for revenge. Ghost of Yotei doesn’t have a firm release date, but it is expected sometime in 2025.
