Summary

TheFalloutmodding scene never ceases to impress. We recently had the launch of Fallout: London, an entire fan-made game set within England’s capital, while other teams are working tirelessly toremake the original isometric classics in the modern, Bethesda style.

But it doesn’t end there, as another group of fans are making yet another standalone game withinNew Vegascalled “Nuevo México”.

“Mexico City is the largest city in North America and serves as the biggest hub in Fallout: Nuevo México,” the team stated in the new reveal trailer’s description. “Once the vibrant heart of a massive metropolis, Mexico City now lies in ruin, a battleground for factions struggling for dominance and survival. From the decaying colonia of Chapultepec to the sumberged canals of Xochimilco, the city is a haunting blend of beauty and brutality.”

The trailer opens with a lavish party in an old mansion, defended valiantly by its stylish robot guards, before cutting to an unsettling shot of corpses hanging by chains in the basement while a chainsaw revs as someone screams, “No! Please Señor, no!”

A narrator begins to speak as we quickly move on from the horror show to Mexico City itself, an impressively detailed metropolis on the scale of some of Bethesda’s grandest.

“Here we are, thriving in the middle of nowhere, under my command,” the narrator says. “People think that because I’m in charge, it was all a walk through irradiated roses for me. They’re wrong. Those from the north, with their shiny armour and stories of greatness, think they can walk around here like this is their hunting ground. Cheap perceptions aren’t worth the dust under your boots.”

The narrator reveals that, in the wake of the apocalypse, she took the reins of the Cartel for herself, and is fighting back against what seems to be the Brotherhood of Steel. The project is still “largely under development”, so it’ll be a while before we get our hands on it and find out more, but it’s an exciting glimpse into a side of Fallout’s world that we haven’t seen first-hand.

What Happened To Mexico In Fallout?

Mexico’s history in the Fallout universe is tragic. Before the bombs even dropped, a major earthquake destroyed most of Mexico City. Not long after, the United States imposed sanctions on Mexico in an attempt to destabilise the country so that it could sweep in and take its oil amidst the worsening Resource Wars.

So, when The Great War began, Mexico was hit especially hard. Speaking to Raul Tejada in New Vegas, we discover that Mexico City became a “radioactive ruin” full of looters that have split into raider tribes. But the bombs dropping was only the start.

In Fallout 2, we destroy the Control Station Enclave where the new President of America is stationed. However, the control station is an oil rig, and so its destruction spreads radioactive waste along the coast of California and Mexico, irradiating all ocean life.

So, while Mexico City might not have suffered as devastating a fate as Washington DC, it’s hardly an ideal holiday spot.
