Summary
Vault 13, a fan-made Fallout 1 remake built from the ground up withinFallout 4, announced earlier today thatthe project had been cancelleddue to “burnout” and “difficulty in recruiting”.
Throughout its development, the team shared assets with the fan-made Fallout 2 remake Project Arroyo. Given the pair’s close relationship and similar ambitions of reimagining the classic Black Isle Studios games in the vein of Bethesda’s more modern releases, I reached out to Project Arroyo to ask if Vault 13’s closure had any effect on its own future.
“It doesn’t impact our mod at all luckily,” project lead Damion Daponte told TheGamer. “Some of the 3D artists actually came over from [Vault 13] to our [team] so they can continue having something to work on.”
What The Devs Are Saying On Discord
Fans raised similar concerns in the Project Arroyo Discord server about the cancellation of Vault 13 having a negative impact on the fan-made Fallout 2 remake. But lead dialogue editor ‘Jon’ simply said, “We’re not going anywhere.”
“Our development pathway is completely different,” Jon explained. “We were just collaborating on assets, etc. It’s definitely a bummer, hopefully, they come back with a vengeance and this is just a hiatus.”
Daponte told us earlier this year thatProject Arroyo plans to launch on Steam.
Vault 13 will share all of the work it made up until its closure onto the Nexus Mods website in the “coming weeks”, so if anyone wants to pick up the torch and continue development, they can. However, it might also benefit Project Arroyo; “At that point we may be given permission to incorporate their materials,” Jon noted.
So, while it’s certainly a shame to see Vault 13 cancelled, Project Arroyo powers on with its own development, seeking to bring Fallout 2 to an entirely new audience over two decades on from its launch.
