Final Fantasy 14director Naoki Yoshida confirmed in a recent interview that theFinal Fantasy 9collaboration has nothing to do with the rumoured FF9 remake.

As the biggest RPG series in the world of gaming (sorryBaldur’s Gate 3), it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are a lot ofFinal Fantasy projects rumoured to be in the works at Square Enix. Without a doubt, the most prominent rumour over the past few years has beenregarding a potential remake of Final Fantasy 9, something that wasfirst spotted in an infamous Nvidia leak.

Although most of the Square Enix games listed in the Nvidia leak have all been confirmed over the past few years, the same sadly can’t be said of the Final Fantasy 9 remake, which is still just a rumour to this day. We’ve heard lots about it from insiders and leakersthat seem to suggest it’s still in the works, but it seems like one prominent Final Fantasy creator doesn’t have anything to do with it.

Final Fantasy 14 Director Says FF9 Collaboration Has Nothing To Do With The Rumoured Remake

I am, of course, talking about Final Fantasy 14’s director, Naoki Yoshida. Many fans thought that Creative Business Unit 3 might be involved in the remake’s development, a theory that gained more traction thanks to all of the references to FF9 found within Dawntrail. While Yoshi-P has already denied his involvement in the past, he recentlyspoke out about the leaked project during an interview with JPGames.DE.

During the interview, Yoshi-P was asked why his team didn’t just wait for the rumoured Final Fantasy 9 remake to be officially announced before putting content inspired by the game into Final Fantasy 14. In response, Yoshida said that he never thought about doing it in relation to the unannounced project and that the “commercial sense” never really factored into the decision.

Yoshida goes on to say that there are a lot of fans of Final Fantasy 9 on his development team, and that if they had just waited on “any sort of Remake project” they’d be stuck that way for a long time. Yoshi-P finished his question by once again implying he knows nothing about the rumoured remake and said that he wished whatever team might be working on it the best of luck.

If we were to wait for any sort of Remake project, we would just be waiting and waiting… if any team was to take on doing a Remake for Final Fantasy IX, I would wish them the best of luck. - Naoki Yoshida

Although Yoshida has previously seemed to tease that Dawntrail’s Final Fantasy 9 references are more than just background dressing, he does seem pretty set that he has nothing to do with the FF9 remake and seems to know nothing more about it than we do. These collaborations also take a lot longer than most players think, which makes a purposefully timed collaboration seem very difficult to pull off.
