Summary

Final Fantasy 14’s Dawntrailexpansion has now been and gone, as fans are now settling into the next couple of years of post-expansion patches. With the release of Crossroads next month, and the way that Dawntrail itself ended, some have been wondering exactly how far ahead director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) has planned, and whether the seeds of a much bigger story have already been planted.

In a recent interview withKorean news outlet GameInsight, Yoshi-P revealed that this is actually the case. When asked exactly how far ahead he and his team have planned out in terms of Final Fantasy 14’s overarching story, Yoshi-P claimed that he’s been planning the story several expansions ahead of current content ever since the release of Heavensward and Stormblood, meaning the ideas in Dawntrail had been percolating for quite a while.

Final Fantasy 14’s Story Has Already Been Planned Up To 10.0

Yoshi-P then goes on to explain that he and his team are “currently preparing three expansions”, and that could potentially rise up to four. Yoshi-P even claims that he’d be willing to sort out Final Fantasy 14’s story for the next twenty years if Square Enix wuld allow it, claiming that he’d probably “die of excitement before I’d lose interest”.

“Since we worked on Heavensward and Stormblood, I’ve been planning for the story several expansions ahead. We already have ideas for major expansions up to version 10.0, and we’re thinking about how to connect these ideas with what players want. We’re currently preparing three expansions, and we could potentially plan up to four.”

That’s such a large amount of time that it can be difficult to put into context without having an existential crisis, so I’m going to choose to focus on the here and now instead. Thankfully, there’s a lot of interesting stuff coming up in Final Fantasy 14’s next few patches that will keep us distracted from the relentless march of time, such as savage Alliance Raidsandthe Beastmaster limited Job.

We don’t know just yet exactly when these things will be added to Final Fantasy 14, but we’ll hopefully get some more news about themduring next month’s Live Letter, which is taking place on November 1. We’ll be covering it as it happens, so if you’re able to’t check out the show itself, you know where to find all of your updates.
