Summary

If you owneda mobile phoneback in 2013, chances are you had Flappy Bird installed. It was a viral sensation at the time, covered by practically every popular online content creator out there, and even some news channels. However, its popularity was pretty short-lived, ascreator Dong Nguyen delisted the game in February 2014after claiming that its runaway successwas ruining his “simple life.”

Ever since, Flappy Bird has been unavailable to download, and phones that still had the game installed became collectors items. However, over a decade after the game was originally delisted,Flappy Bird is making a grand comeback, returning to both iPhone and Android devices at some point in the near future. You can check out the “new” Flappy Bird trailer down below.

It appears that this version of Flappy Bird is a little more complex than the original. While the original game had you simply jumping between pipes as a yellow bird, this version appears to let you customize your bird, and it even has a hub world which you can use to travel to different worlds, most likely filled with different levels. It also looks like a loot box system has been added, as you can break open eggs for rewards.

Flappy Bird’s Trademark May Have Been Acquired For Free

Unfortunately, the return of Flappy Bird is already a little controversial. You may have assumed that this new version is a result of creator Dong Nguyen changing his mind and improving his original creation, but his hatred of Flappy Bird appears to be unchanged. This new game is made by entirely different people, and the trademark for the game may have been scooped up from underneath Nguyen for free.

According tosome court documents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, new Flappy Bird owners Gametech Holdings, LLC filed a suit against Nguyen for the game’s trademark. Flappy Bird has apparently been delisted for so long that the trademark hd been considered abandoned, andGametech Holdings, LLC was able to swipe the game’s rights for free, since Nguyen never attempted to reclaim it.

We still know very little about this new version of Flappy Bird, apart from the fact that it has some new modes and different characters. We’ll find out pretty soon when we’ll be able to download Flappy Bird once again, probably so we can prepare for our productivity levels to take a sharp nosedive.
