Summary

The latest patch notes forFortnite’sRocket Racingmode confirm that it will no longer receive “themed updates” despite it being less than a year since it joined the game.

Although 2024 has been abig year for Fortnite thanks to its crossovers with Avatar, Fallout, Metallica, Disney, and a whole lot more, the latest updates havenothing on the mind-blowingly exciting start of Chapter 5, Season 1. Epic teased that it’d represent a new start for the game, and theintroduction of Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival meant that it lived up to the promise.

While all three modes had a pretty decent start, it quickly became clear that they weren’tallgoing to keep fans away from Battle Royale for very long. While Fortnite Festival and Lego Fortnite still draw in decent crowdsand have their dedicated audiences, the same can’t really be said of Psyonix’s Rocket Racing, which has consistently struggled with its player count.

Fortnite And Psyonix Are Already Stopping “Themed Updates” For Rocket Racing

Over on the Rocket Racing subreddit, the latest patch notes for the mode were shared by Redditor EmptyTux. While most of it is pretty standard and just showcases some of the quests and rewards that have just been added to Rocket Racing, there’s a very interesting reveal waiting at the end - themed updates are no more.

The patch notes confirm that v31.40 is bringing the theme “back to the starting line” and saying goodbye to themed updates as a whole. That essentially means that there likely won’t be any new maps made by Epic or Psyonix in the future and no new themes to refresh Rocket Racing as a whole.

v31.40 brings the theme back to the starting line as we say goodbye to Inferno Island and themed updates. Future updates will be taking new roads with refreshed Ranked periods, renewed Quests, and additional Car items you may take to the track!

Instead, the notes says that future updates will be using “refreshed Ranked periods, renewed quests, and additional Car items”, which sounds like the bare minimum is going to be done. Epic does suggest that players can keep finding new races with custom-made tracks, but it’s not quite the same as official maps.

Considering how rarely Epic speaks about Rocket Racing, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise, even though it’s not even been a year since the mode was first introduced.Players in the Reddit thread are taking it about as well as you can expect, with many pointing out that they’re only going to be sold car cosmetics in the future and have nothing to look forward to.
