Summary
It’s not new news thatSquare Enixis aiming to vastly diversify its approach to video game releases. Withthe costs of development constantly rising, making things exclusive to one console isn’t feasible, and so the company affirmed in May that it was changing its practices.
In a financial release, Square said it will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy,” that involves the likes ofNintendo,MicrosoftandSony. The end result will be “an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles.” And those efforts are already being seenas Final Fantasy 14 was finally released on Xbox.
But as those plans continue to shake out, one ofSquare Enix’smost respected leaders has some thoughts on how he wants things to be done. The legendary Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida revealed in a recent interview that the end goal is for its games to be enjoyed by all at the same time and on the same day.
Gaming Is For Everyone
Speaking to 4Gamer, andas transcribed and translated by Eurogamer, Yoshida said that fans of Square Enix titles can expect the following:
“Square Enix titles will be released simultaneously on each platform more and more.”
“Of course, we want you to play it a lot on other platforms as well,” he said, specifically in reference toFantasian Neo Dimension. That game, in particular, will see a release across all the major platforms, including Xbox.
Ideally, future Final Fantasy titles will follow that trend. Because, as it stands, Final Fantasy 14 only just came to Xbox after being on PlayStation for quite some time. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy has so far had two PS exclusive titles, with Crisis Core being a multiplatform release. If the third FF7 game were to come to Xbox day-and-date, then the first two would also need to come before that, and it remains to be seen when or if that’ll be the case.
All of this is to say that Square Enix certainly has the right ideas, but only time will tell if its approach will pan out exactly as described. Still, it’s good to hear so much of its leadership be vocal about this potential.
