WhenSucker PunchlaunchesGhost of Yotei, the follow-up to 2020sGhost of Tsushima, in 2025, it’ll mark the beginning of what the studio andPlayStationare hoping will be a fruitful franchise. That franchise will see the release of at least one movie, as well as multiple spin-offs.

According to a larger profile by The New York Timesfollowing Yotei’s reveal during Tuesday’s State of Play presentation, the upcoming title will serve as the jumping off point for an official franchise. Over the years,Sonyhas transformed many of its gaming properties into multimedia mammoths, including a critically-acclaimed adaptation ofThe Last of Uson HBO, as well as a high-performing box office hit inUncharted, among others. The “Ghost” series will attempt to enter that pantheon.

It’s unclear what exactly those spin-off titles could be about, though it is likely that each of them will be their own entity. In a blog post on PlayStation’s site, Sucker Punchnoted that the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima were a wandering samurai, player freedom and a beautiful world. More so, the studio believes that the central theme of the titular “Ghost” can be explored in a variety of ways.

It stands to reason then that those spin-offs could involve different personalities from throughout feudal Japan. That could also allow players to experience different segments of Japan, as Yotei will take place in the region near Lake Toya, whereas Tsushima took place on Tsushima Island.

As for the movie plans,Chad Stahelski has been attached to a planned adaptation of Tsushima. He is most famous for his work on the John Wick series, andwill be joined by Takashi Doscher, who has been tasked with a script. In June,it was rumored that Hiroyuki Sanada of Shogun would have a role.

All of this is to say that it appears that Sony and Sucker Punch have massive plans for the franchise. More so, it won’t be long before fans can see those plans put in motion as Yotei has a 2025 release window.
