GTA 6 Will Reportedly Target 30fps On PS5 Pro

On Tuesday, the PS5 Pro was revealed and boasted “three pillars” — a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PSSR (PlayStationSpectral Super Resolution), AI upscaling, which will help to boost frame rates. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like it will help with Rockstar’s next grand adventure.

Speaking to Digital Foundry,IGNasked the experts if Grand Theft Auto 6 would realistically be able to run at 60fps onSony’smid-generation refresh. Digital Foundry said, “No.Grand Theft Autogames have always run complex simulations that push the CPU hard," adding, “The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5, and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 version is targeting 30fps. This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem.”

While this may sound rough for fans, Digital Foundry clarifies that “every GTA game has initially launched on their target platforms at 30fps (or lower!),” suggesting it’s maybe not as disastrous as it first sounds.

Digital Foundry admits that “all bets are off” in the unlikely eventRockstaris aiming for 4K60 on the standard PS5; however, they add that “What you will get will be higher quality visuals, but likely still running at similar frame-rates [to the base console],” and that “If GTA 6 can’t sustain a locked 30fps, PS5 Pro can run the CPU with a 10 percent bump to clock speeds – so you may get more stable performance.”

It’s another slight blow to the optics of the PS5 Pro, which could already do with a win, but that’s not stopped frustrated fans from getting excited. Early indications suggest that the Pro will sell well, given that fans are alreadystocking up on the console’s detachable disc drive.
