Summary
It may be hard to believe, but in just a few days, it will have been exactly 17 years sinceHalo 3first launched onXbox 360consoles. And while the tagline of the game was “Finish The Fight,” in the years following the game’s release, it’s clear that the fight isn’t anywhere near finished.
That’s because after Halo 3, there was aHalo 4and aHalo 5, as well as aHalo Infinite, with seemingly more Halo content involving Master Chief planned for the future. More Halo content isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but as Halo 3 inches closer and closer to adulthood, fans are wondering if it should have marked the end of Master Chief’s story.
It’s an interesting question given that Master Chief is certainly one of the more iconic protagonists in all video games, but one worth exploring either way. And so,taking to Reddit, fans discussed the pros and cons of it all.
Spoilers for Halo 3 will follow.
It’s Called Halo For A Reason
Starting from the top, this fan had a unique take on the whole situation. Evidently, they are the most upvoted comment on the thread. “Yes. End the series the way it started, him in cryo. It’s like poetry, it rhymes. Like a closed loop, a circle, or a ring some may say.”
Indeed, Halo 3’s base ending is rather poetic and ties things up nicely, though the Legendary ending does give way to future installments, of which there were.
On the other hand, one gamer proposed a break. “I don’t think it should have ended, but I think they should have taken a 5-10year break from MC stories and focus on spin offs and different stories until they found a decent way to carry the main story forward,” they wrote.
That was partially done, withReachbeing the next mainline installment andODSTserving as an interstitial. There were also theHalo Warsgames, but more stories within the world would have been welcomed.
The rest of the thread, which is well worth reading, is chock-full of differing takes, including using Halo 4 as an epilogue to the series, as well as introducinga transitional Spartan to take over for Master Chief.
None of this is to say that what’s happened since Halo 3 has been bad, though fans have differing opinions about all that. But it is worth wondering what could have been if things had ended right then and there.
