Helldivers 2developer Arrowhead Studios is currently in the middle of a massive attempt to try and get players back on board following a lackluster and disappointing couple of months. Players have been leaving in droves andcriticizing Arrowheadfor the direction that the game has taken recently, after a series of unpopular nerfs made the game less fun to play.
Ever since the release of the Escalation of Freedom update, Arrowhead has been trying to address the issues fans have, anda series of buff announcementshave gone a long way in making people happier. However, Arrowhead has also been very keen to point out that Helldiver 2 isn’t going to become buff central any time soon, as community manager Thomas ‘Twinbeard’ Petersson has begun trying to set expectations.
First spotted by GamesRadar, a message from Petersson onthe Helldivers 2 Discord channel- responding to a fan worried about stealth nerfs following the game’s many upcoming buffs - has explained that more nerfs will come to Helldivers 2, as it’s inevitable that other things “will need looking over” following so many changes.
Helldivers 2 Dev Says More Nerfs Are Inevitable
“Will there be more nerfs? Of course there will,” says Petersson. “Anytime you balance a ton of things, others will need looking over as well. That being said, this patch will see a lot more buffing in general. It will focus on making guns and equipment feel more viable, making you vulnerable if you mess up while letting you do more damage and be more effective when you have the right tools for the job. Better dynamics and, we hope, more fun.”
Petersson is right, of course. Even though I’m sure the majority of players would briefly enjoy stomping on bugs and feeling incredibly overpowered, it wouldn’t do wonders for the game’s balance. Challenge is the heartbeat of a game like Helldivers 2, and taking that away with an endless stream of buffs would almost definitely have the same effect as an endless stream of nerfs. It’s a careful balancing act, and one that Arrowhead is attempting to right again.
Thankfully, it seems as though Arrowhead has learned its lesson. Attempts are being made at the moment to get the game in a healthy enough state before the arrival of the Illuminate, which some think will happen at the end of Arrowhead’s 60-day plan to get things back on track. We know their arrival is close, after what appeared to be Illuminate territory was spotted on the Galactic Map, so Arrowhead definitely has something up its sleeve for the coming weeks.
