Helldivers 2 has been experiencing a renaissance since the release of its massive balance patch. The average number of players playing on Steam has almosttripled overnightas players return to play the new-feel Helldivers 2.
In the run-up to the release of Space Marine 2 and amid some of the negativity surrounding Helldivers 2, many detractors were speculating that Space Marine 2 would be the death of Helldivers 2. Both are player-versus-environment third-person shooters where you fight large groups of enemies, so comparisons were always going to be drawn.
Both Games Are Booming
That’s not what happened, both Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2 are very successful. In a Reddit thread making light of the speculation that Space Marine 2 would ‘kill’ Helldivers 2, Pilestedtleft a commentwith his thoughts on the comparisons between the two games.
“Hey friends! Thank you for all your amazing feedback, and it’s amazing to finally see so many divers return,” he began. “I just wanted to pop in here and say that I think we should be grateful for getting several awesome games. I can’t even imagine how I, as a kid, would have felt to be able to play Helldivers 2 and SM2. They are different games, but you can enjoy as many games as you want.”
Space Marine 2 and Helldivers 2 are certainly completely distinct in their presentation, even if they share some of the same core gameplay themes. As Helldivers 2 is a first-party title that’s seen afew controversies, a certain section of people are eager to see it fail. Thankfully, Arrowhead seems to have gotten things back on track following their 60-day plan.
