Summary
Helldivers 2dataminers recently uncovered the original game’s armour, revamped to fit the sequel’s quality and aesthetic. According to those same leakers, it’s “expected to release for Liberty Day” later this month.
For the unaware, this holiday takes place every year on October 26, celebrating the anniversary of ‘Managed Democracy’, the unification of Super Earth following the Great War.
Helldivers 2 dataminers also found the Constitution Rifle from the original game, which was released in 2016 for the first Liberty Day.
Developer Arrowhead celebrated the occasion in the first game from 2016 to 2019 with blog posts, contests, giveaways, cosmetics, and even new guns. Going by the leaked rifle and armour, it certainly looks like Helldivers 2 will keep up the tradition.
The Armour References The Cyborgs And Illuminate
What’s especially interesting about this leaked armour is its description: “Worn by the heroic Helldivers who battled and forever defeated the Terminids, Cyborgs, and Illuminate in the First Galactic War.”
Firstly, it references the Cyborgs and Illuminate, two factions from the original game. The Cyborgs created the Automatons, explaining the many similarities in their designs, but they wereimprisoned on Cyberstan after the first war.
It’s unclear what happened to them afterwards, or what their status is by the time of Helldivers 2, but some fans believe they gave up their humanity completely and became Automatons themselves.
As for the Illuminate, according to Super Earth propaganda, they were completely eradicated. However, fans have already caught a glimpse atIlluminate weaponry and their cloaked warships, whileleaks have been pouring out for monthsof their new models.Their territory was even spotted on the Galactic Map. “Forever defeated” might be a stretch, eh?
Some speculate that the Illuminate will finally join the Second Galactic War this Liberty Day.
Another fun note is that it outright confirms that the “bugs” we fought in the first Helldivers are Terminids. It’s a pretty obvious point, given how similar their designs are, but it just goes to show how futile that first war was, even if Super Earth is determined to paint a more heroic outcome.
The Terminids are still plaguing the galaxy, the Cyborgs live on through the Automatons, and the Illuminate are waiting to strike. But hey, at least we have some cool armour to wear while we die screaming.
