A lot of interesting things have been dug out of theHelldivers 2files by dataminers, fromIlluminate enemiesto new weaponry and Automaton tanks. But today, something oddly normal has been discovered.
“I found a frying pan,” leaker Digital–Hazard posted, attaching a picture of the model. Some commenters argued that it might actually be the top of a tank, just flipped upside down, but no, the file name is literally “portable_fryingpan_01”.
It’s unclear if you’re able to pick it up, so maybe it’s just clutter. But then why would a frying pan be lying out in the open on a barren wasteland of a planet? Some speculate that it might actually be the first melee weapon,a highly-requested feature that fans have been asking about since launch. It wouldn’t be unprecedented, after all. Frying pans are a staple ofTF2andPUBG, maybe they can be a staple of Helldivers, too.
It Looks A Bit Scuffed, But There’s A Reason
The model looks a little funky, with a distorted outline crammed into the middle of the pan, but as many commenters point out, it’s probably just the damaged version overlayed on top: “Models in the game usually come paired with their destroyed versions, and the current tools just export them as one model so they need to be separated manually,” Digital–Hazard explained.
Why it can be damaged brings us back to the original question — what the hell is it for? It might be that it wears down with use, i.e. beating a metal Automaton tank messes up your pan (more likely, bashing squishy Illuminate and Terminid skulls in). Or it might be just be a different variant of the pan that can be found as clutter on the map.
