Summary

This week’s State Of Play was a mixed bag for most. Many were excited bythe prospect of Ghost Of YoteiandAstro Bot’s DLC, but maybe not quite as enamored to learnthe rumors Horizon Zero Dawn is getting a PS5 remaster are true. If you’re already mildly annoyed that a still-relatively new game is being remastered, that annoyance will likely be dialed up when you learn the price of the originalZero Dawnhas quietly been doubled following the remaster announcement.

Spotted by Eurogamer, the price of Horizon Zero Dawn onPS4was$19.99 on the PlayStation Store as recently as Tuesday, the day that the remaster was officially announced. However, if you go to the PlayStation Store to buy it now, you will find thatthe price has been increased to $39.99. There’s a very good, albeit what feels like an underhanded reason for that, and it’s not becausePlayStationthinks people will be flooding to its store to buy the original game a little more than a month after the remaster is released.

The most likely reason PlayStation has doubled the price of Zero Dawn is to stop people getting the remaster for $10 less than it will retail for. While thePS5version of Zero Dawn will cost $49.99, if you already own the game on PS4, you will be able to take advantage of its upgrade path.Upgrading the base version to the remaster will cost $9.99. If PlayStation had left Zero Dawn at $19.99, many would have twigged that they could buy that version and get the upgrade, effectively bagging the remaster for $29.98.

Horizon Zero Dawn’s Complete Edition Is Back Up To $40

No Sneakily Buying It For $20 And Getting That $10 Upgrade Next Month

PlayStation has clearly learned from what it likely deems as a mistake it made when it releasedThe Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered, another PS5 upgrade for a PS4 game that owners of the original can get for $10.The original version of The Last Of Us Part 2 was available for $20which meant people bought it and its upgrade for a combined $30 rather than the $50 you had to pay for the PS5 version. That loophole has been quickly pulled shut when it comes to Zero Dawn.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

WHERE TO PLAY

Horizon Zero Dawn follows Aloy, a mysterious villager who sets out to protect her world from a wide array of dangerous machines that stalk the lands.

While there’s no silver lining for those who don’t already own Zero Dawn, there is good news for those of you who claimed the game through PlayStation’s Play At Home initiative. Even though the game was given away for free, the Play At Home version of the game will still be eligible for the $9.99 PS5 upgrade.
