Summary
Thehorrorgenre is home to many cool and memorable characters that push through unimaginable odds to reach the end of their stories. However, while some characters manage to see another day and sometimes even achieve some sort of happy ending, others are not so lucky, and it’s only downhill from there.
Some characters will learn that happy endings are only temporary, while others eventually realize that the sacrifices they made were in vain. From characters whose curiosity got the better of them to others who had no idea what they were getting into, these are the unluckiest horror game protagonists.
8Leon S. Kennedy
Not What He Signed Up For
Leon S. Kennedy is by far one of the unluckiestcharacters in the Resident Evil series. All he really needed to do on his first day was show up to the Racoon City Police Department where he would start his new career. Instead, he finds himself thrust into a zombie outbreak and Umbrella’s conspiracy.
Even after escaping the hungry maws of the dead and even surviving the nuclear destruction of the city, he would soon find himself being taken in by the government. Leon is a character whose entire life plan was abruptly changed due to the Raccoon City Incident. If only he had turned around that night.
7Chuck Greene
No Happy Endings
Chuck Green may seem like he can handle it all as he keeps his daughter safe, but the entirety of hischaracter is riddled with bad luck and tragedy. He went from living a life of stardome into one rooted in the criminal underworld. With his daughter infected, he has to rely on shows like Terror is Reality to pay for her medication.
When the outbreak begins, it catches him right when he is out of medicine, forcing him to go out into Fortune City to find more. He then gets accused of starting the outbreak, which he fortunately proves wrong. Ironically, Chuck ends up turning to a life of crime to keep his daughter safe and losing his second love, Stacey, in the process.
6The Victis Crew
Call Of Duty Zombie’s Underrated Crew
The Victis Crew are a group of four civilian survivors that were introduced in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Zombies and eventually returned in Black Ops 4. They become lucky at the moment but unlucky in the long run when Richtofen makes contact with one of their members, Stuhlinger.
From here on out, they become lapdogs who go on various fetch quests without ever understanding the extent of what they’re doing or why. They simply trust that if they keep pushing forwards, they might eventually end up somewhere safe. This does not go to plan as the final map of the Aether storyline has them left behind in the Dark Aether after completing one final mission.
5Miles Upshur
Surviving A Night In Outlast
Miles Upshur is an investigative reporter who arrives at Mount Massive Asylum. Following a tip off of a huge story, Miles enters the facility with only his camera and wits. What ensues is the most terrifying night of his life as he gets pushed deeper into the facility, chased around by violent variants, and is forced to keep himself hidden the entire time.
What makes Miles Upshur such an unlucky character is that even though he manages to persevere through every obstacle that comes his way, he still loses. As soon as Miles Upshur manages to escape Mount Massive Asylum, he ends up being executed by the military. So even the story he worked so hard to get goes to waste.
4Zoey
The characters from Left 4 Dead are known for being quirky in their own right. However, Zoey might just be the unluckiest of the original four. At the start of the outbreak, a zombie breaks into her family’s home and kills her mother while wounding her father. She is then forced to mercy kill him to prevent him from turning.
After four failed rescue attempts, she and the rest of the group learn that they are not immune tothe Green Flu, but carriers. So, no matter where they go, they pose a threat to the non-infected. In addition to this, she soon learns that this carrier gene is passed down through the father’s side, revealing that she most likely killed her father in vain.
3Luigi
Not His Genre
It is safe to say that Luigi was never built to handle horror. This all changes when he receives a notice that he won a mansion. Turns out that the competition was a sham and what waits for him is a mansion full of ghosts that want to take Luigi down.
This is the last place that Luigi would ever want to find himself. However, it just so happens that Mario has already been captured. This forces the tall mustached plumber to step up to the plate and save the day. While finding himself in this situation once is unlucky enough as it is, Luigi has been thrown into this scenario three times already. Talk about bad luck.
2Iron Lung
The Unnamed Prisoner Is Doomed Regardless
The unnamed prisoner in Iron Lung is by far one of the unluckiest horror protagonists of them all. While other characters may have a chance of survival despite the situation, the humans in the world of Iron Lung are living on borrowed time.
This unnamed prisoner is sent into the depths of the blood ocean where the expedition is also meant to be a method of execution. With every habitable planet suddenly vanishing, this leaves the remnants of humanity in space to fend for themselves. With resources dwindling and factions fighting for command, the unnamed prisoner is living on borrowed time, regardless of how things go down.
1Amanda Ripley
Some Things Are Left Unknown
Amanda Ripley is the daughter of Ellen Ripley fromthe Alien franchise. After her mother vanishes due to the encounter with the Xenomorph in the first film, Amanda Ripley is desperate for the truth behind the events that led to her disappearance.
However, some things are best left unknown because Amanda Ripley finds out in the worst way possible. She is plunged into a similar situation during the events of Alien: Isolation, in which she is hunted down by the same species that her mother managed to escape from. However, this is one of those situations where it’s entirely Amanda’s fault for wanting to know. Well, now she does.
