You’ll face a lot of bosses inDragon Age: The Veilguard, some of which are a lot harder than others. Potentially the first one you’ll struggle with is the Calivan boss fight in theSea of Bloodquest in the early hours of the game. He’s not quite a High Dragon, but it’s a tough fight regardless.

The fight is in three phases, with the second one being by far the hardest. The form alteration comes out of nowhere and completely changes the attacks and elemental damage you need to avoid. You’ll need some tips to face not only that middle phase, but also the phases that come before and after it.

How To Beat Calivan

The first phase sees Calivan in his standard, smaller form. To start, hesummons a group of Magesto attack you. They each have shields, soattack them from rangebefore focusing on Calivan again.

He’ll also cast a spell thatfires a ball of Blight atyou. The attack is easy to see as he holds his staff in the air before casting it, so wait for it to come towards you and dodge it.

Sometimes, the attack will come inthrees. If it does, keep dodging, but ensure you’re doing so at the right time to avoid all three missiles.

If you get too close to him, a red damage area will briefly appear before Blight spikes fill it. Watch out for them. We’d recommend usingranged attacks when you can, then focusing on close-range attacks once he moves from the starting position.

Calivan’s Pride Phase

The second phase is where things get difficult. In a puff of smoke, a big electric version of Calivan appears as Calivan’s Pride. He’ll now havefull health, armor, and shieldonce more.

His attacks change, too. He has a big purple sword that sends aslash projectiletowards you when he attacks. This one is easy to dodge, butgo left when you do if you can.

Throughout, try getting close when you may to shield attack and do increased armor damage. Then, try to Stagger Calivan’s Pride as much as you can, as Takedowns do a lot of damage in this fight.

The main attack to be wary of is telegraphed but hard to dodge. He will begin charging a purple spell and place a purple orb in the air in the middle of the arena. That then triggers red AOE circles around and dodge out of the way as more appear. Keep dodge rolling, and then go in for the attack once it’s over.

Calivan’s Final Phase

Finally, the fight goes back to a continuation of the first phase. Calivan has his shield back but only half his health. The blight projectiles that can be hard to dodge are back, as is a group of Mages, but you only need tocopy what you did in the first phase. Soon, you’ll have Calivan beaten.
