The three Rival Battles in Sonic Generations areMetal Sonic,Shadow the Hedgehog, andSilver the Hedgehog. Here’s how you unlock and defeat each one of them.

Metal Sonic in the overworld in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

How To Unlock Rival Bosses

Sonic Generations’ nine stages are split into three areas, all representing a different era of Sonic’s past. Each area has its own Rival Boss from that era, and each one guards a Chaos Emerald.

An area’s Rival Boss only becomes available after you’ve completed the three stages in that area. That meanscompleting both Act 1 and Act 2 of each stage.

Once you’ve done this in every stage, challenge gates will appear on the map, but you’ll also be able to unlock these Rival Bosses. These come in the form of the rival themselves waiting for you on the map. Simply walk up to them, and start the level.

While you need to do challenges to advance the story, you may skip Rival Bosses until a certain point. In fact, you can get all the way to the final boss before you need to circle back and beat them, since this is when you’ll need all seven Chaos Emeralds.

How To Beat Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic represents the classic era, since he fares from 1993’s Sonic CD.

In his stage, you’re running across a 2D platform with Metal Sonic in pursuit. At first, he’ll try to attack by running straight into you. Jump to avoid this, and thenland on his head to deal damage. After landing a hit, he’ll then let out a wave of energy. Either speed up or slow down to avoid this, and thenjump in him again once it’s worn off.

He’ll then mix up his strategy by going to the side and hurling objects at you. This part is about speed management, so eitherspeed up or slow down to avoid them.

After this, he’ll combine his first two attacks, trying to speed into you while charged up with energy.Keep running away from him until this wears off, and thenjump on him as you did before. After this third attack, he will be defeated.

How To Beat Shadow

This Shadow fight is inspired by his first appearance in Sonic Adventure 2. Much like that battle, it plays out like a race.

Here, you have to race Shadow to collect balls of energy.Getting two of them unlocks a temporary ability.

If Shadow gets two of them, he’ll get to use his power. This forces you tododge a series of Chaos Spears, but this is easily enough done with quick step (back triggers on controller).

While Shadow’s ability is easy enough to dodge, it can drag on the fight a lot longer than it needs to be. So, to avoid him charging his attack in the first place, make sure you stay in front of them and get the energy first. This can be done by collecting as many rings as you can and performing tricks on ramps.

To beat Shadow, you need to charge your own attack. Once you’ve done this, it will take you to a new part of the map. Here, you need toboost into the asteroids you see, as this will send them flying into Shadow, slowing him down. Once he’s slowed down enough, keep boosting into him, and you’ll deplete him of his rings, defeating him.

How To Beat Silver

Silver is the third and final Rival Boss in Sonic Generations, and his stage is inspired by the infamous 2006 release, Sonic the Hedgehog (better known as Sonic ‘06).

This fight is all about managing your speed and using your boost sparingly, sinceyou’ll need that boost gauge as full as possible for the final phase of the fight.

Your first opportunity to attack Silver comes when he’s levitating debris. Boost close enough to the first one, then homing attack into it, and then the next.Do this until you reach Silver, and then homing attack into him too.

Between attacks, be sure to fill up your boost gauge. you’re able to do this by collecting rings or, strangely enough, crashing into the debris that litters the map - just make sure it isn’t the debris that Silver is controlling because this will do damage.

Another chance you get comes when he piles debris into a ramp. Boost so that you’re on the debris, and thenkeep going into you’re in homing attack range of him once more.

Sometimes, he’ll levitate three pieces of debris over your head. One will also crash down first. When he does this, quickly rush to where that debris was, so you can dodge the next two pieces that come crashing down. He can also send a blast of energy your way when you’re trying to catch up to him, which can be dodged with quick step.

Once you’ve landed four attacks, the boss enters its final form. Here, Silver will collect a huge pile of debris, and the stage’s perspective will change so you’re running away from it. Here, you need to hope that you have enough boost, because that’s the only way you’re avoiding it. If you do,keep boosting, as well as dodging the falling pieces of debris Silver throws your way. Keep going until you reach him, and thenland one more homing attack.
