The first major decision you make inDragon Age: The Veilguardwith significant consequences sees you choosewhether to defend Minrathous with Neve or Treviso with Lucanis. If you choose Treviso, you get the questOn Deadly Wings, where you fight your first dragon of the game:Corius the Icetalon.
SinceCorius is an ice dragon, it is weak to Fire damage, soDavrin should be in your teamalongside Lucanis. It seems impossible to defeat Corius, since you’re way under levelled for this fight. And, really, it is - but there’s more than one way to skin at dragon, sothe way you complete this mission is not quite how you expect.
How To Hurt Corius The Icetalon
When you first fight Corius the Icetalon, you may notice your attacks do very little. You’re dishing out minimum damage, and taking hits that almost knock out out whenever Corius lashes out. But you need to realise thatthis is not a traditional fight. You’re not just trying to whittle down its health bar before it does the same to you.
You will only need to get Corius' health down by a third before a cutscene ends the questas the dragon flies off, wounded.
Of course, at your current level, getting it to tow-thirds health is still an issue. When fighting Corius, you shouldkeep your distance. Warriors get the raw end of the deal here, as they like to rush in, but even with their added tankiness, Corius will wreck you.Stay back, dodge its attacks, and rely onDavrin’s Fire damage detonated by Lucanis' abilities.
If you haveFire Abilities, or any that offer good area control, use themhere.
Corius' legs will glow purple when they are vulnerable, and this is where to attack - seeour Weakpoints guidefor more information on how that works. In short, it’s extra damage.
However, if youstay there for more than a couple of seconds, the legs kick you awayand drain your health in an instant. Sorush in and out, taking aim from afar.
These attacksStagger Corius (which we have another deeper dive on), which will make it collapse. At this point, itsunderbelly glows purple and becomes the new Weakpoint. Use yourhardest hitting Ability and Charged Heavy attackswhile it’s vulnerable.
With a bit of luck and clever use ofthe Davrin/Lucanis combo, you shouldonly need to Stagger it once(at least on the standard Adventurer difficulty) to cause enough damage that the fight is called to a close.
Of course, that won’t be the last you’ve seen of it. Next time around, you’ll have a little more fight in you, and it won’t take quite so long to whittle it down. If you’re curious about what might have happened in another life, you would have fought Seartooth Vyrantus, a Fire dragon, had you gone with Neve to Minrathous. But again, that won’t be the last you hear of that one, either. Happy hunting.
