The first Frostpunk game made exploration and scouting a necessary part of survival, andFrostpunk 2is the same. You’ll have to send Frostland teams out into the Frostlands to collect resources and set up Outposts, which can then be upgraded into Settlements.

Outposts and Settlements can be integral to your survival, especially if you choose to prioritize Adaptation as one of your city’s core values. These can bring you a constant flow of resources to tide you over through hard times, especially Whiteouts, so it’s important that you know how to establish them.

Finding Outposts

You’ll be introduced to Frostland exploration mechanics quite early in the game’s Story Mode, and we have afull guide on explorationif you need help getting started. In short, you’ll need to send Frostlands teams out to scout new regions. Each expedition will reveal locations you cancollect resourcesfrom, as well as locations where you canset up permanent Outposts and Settlements.

To set up an Outpost, click on amarker on the Frostlands mapto see if it gives you the option toestablish an Outpost. Click on the correct option, then build a Trail or a Skyway from the outpost to New London to start harvesting the resources there.

You don’t have to create an entirely new trail if you connect the Outpost to an existing trail. It’s wise to invest in an efficient network of Skyways if you plan to establish many Outposts.

Outposts havepermanent requirements for maintenance, so be sure to expand your Districts to accommodate every time you create a new one. They canalso be deactivatedlike Districts if you need to move resources around.

Upgrading Outposts To Settlements

You canupgrade Outposts into full-blown Settlementsand increase their outputs, making them more efficient. The requirements to do this differ depending on the Outpost, but you will need to haveresearched Settlement Heating and Skywaysbefore you may start converting them.

To create Settlements, you will first have to ensure it’sconnected to New London by Skyway, and you will have to have enoughunemployed population, Prefabs, and Coresto construct it.

Like Outposts, Settlements have permanent requirements for maintenance and can be deactivated, butSettlements will require more resources.

You canupgrade Settlementsto further increase their output, but they will againrequire more resources. It’s still worth upgrading Settlements as you’ll be getting more resources with the same amount of infrastructure – just be sure to keep an eye on resource drain.
