The world ofFrostpunk 2is a harsh one. While the denizens of New London might have survived the Great Storm and the decades that followed, they still live in a frozen landscape where the Generator is all that sustains their society. As the Steward, it’s your job to keep them healthy - or at least, as healthy as can be managed, given the circumstances.

The overall health of the population is tracked by several factors, all of which affect one another. Understanding how your decisions will impact the city, both in the short and long term, will help you steer New London toward the future.

a city with high tension indicated by red street lights in Frostpunk 2.

Needs And Problems

Whenever a need goes unfulfilled within the city, aProblemwill begin to arise. There are five Problems, each indicated by a black icon at the top of the screen. you may see how severe a Problem has become - and whether it isgrowing, diminishing, or stable- by hovering over it. You can also tell at a glance the severity of a problem by looking at the icon -major Problems will have oily black tendrils extending from them.

When you start settling smaller colonies out in the Frostlands, they’ll track their own Problems separately from those of New London. Be sure not to neglect them!

When in doubt, you may usuallyresearch an Ideathat will help solve a Problem, even if only partially.

Trust And Tension

Failing to solve Problems will ultimately lead to your citylosing Trust or gaining Tension. These work similarly to Hope and Discontent in theoriginalFrostpunk;if your Trust hits zero or your Tension reaches the maximum, you risk being removed from power, resulting in a game over.

As you may see from the chart above, every Problem causes Tension to rise. One or two Problems, especially if they’re mostly under control, won’t affect things too badly, but combined with other factors like political discontent or an unpopular but necessary decision, they can push your people over the edge.

On the other hand,Trust falls any time people in the city die.Starvation, disease, and violent crime can whittle away at the Trust the people have in you; even if it doesn’t wear down the meter completely, it can prevent you from having enough goodwill to take actions likeRaising Funds from Communitiesorforcing a vote in the Council.

When things in Frostpunk 2 get grim, the people will rise up and overthrow youbefore they all starve or freeze; this means that things like Hunger and Cold contribute to your downfall via Trust and Tension rather than directly through the health of your city.
