The whole process of working through the Wood Side Apartments inSilent Hill 2is focused on obtaining the three coins that you will need to solve the primary puzzle found in the lobby of the apartment building. Depending on the puzzle difficulty you selected at the beginning of the game. The coin puzzle can vary from being relatively simple, to genuinely difficult.

This guide will cover all three of the solutions to the three difficulties that are available during your first run through Silent Hill 2. We’ll give you every step, so, if you are stuck at a specific spot, you can read that section alone and try the rest on your own.

Silent Hill 2, The coin puzzle on the easy difficulty.

Three bright coins, three actors in play,

And behind the Maiden, where she would not know,

Silent Hill 2, The coin puzzle on the normal difficulty.

And then came the Man, so gallant and fine,

in the pale moonlight light did his golden eyes shine.

Unsurprisingly, this one is pretty explicit. The coin with the lady is in the middle, the coin with the flower is on the right(the flower is on the other side of the snake coin), and the coin with the man is on the left.

The man draws his Blade, and she froze in fear,

Silent Hill 2, The coin puzzle on the hard difficulty.

for she did not know the Serpent drew near.

All the coins stay in the same place, but youflip the coin with the man to the sword, and flip the coin with the flower to the snake.

The venomous beast is now lost to the night,

the grand chevalier’s grand despair in daylight,

and under the tree, where the maiden dared lay,

a memory now lies, confined to a Grave.

Swap the snake and the sword, then flip the sword to the man.Now the man is in the “daylight” and the snake is “lost in the night”.Flip the woman to the gravestone.

The Beast who its teeth in her flesh doth bore,

Now you pass the judgment on figures of play,

Which here is the sinner, which carries the blame?

Three bright coins in the five holes be,

The wind from behind the Maiden doth blow,

And here comes the Man, so sleek and so fine,

in the pale moonlight his eyes doth shine.

So, we’ll start by placing the coin with the woman on it in the center, as she is “underneath the tree”. Next, since the man is “in the pale moonlight” we are putting him in the left slot, which is under the moon. Finally, since the “beautiful flower” is behind her, so place the flower coin (which is the reverse side of the snake) in the far right slot.

The man doth approach, his Blade now revealed,

Away from the man doth the Maiden flee,

towards the Flower, away from the tree.

Keep the flower coin in the far-right slot.Flip the coin with the man so that it is showing the sword, andplace it in the space left of the center, as the man “doth approach”. Since the Maiden is fleeing toward the flower, shift her one space to the right.

Where once grew a Flower, a venomous glee,

where once was a Maiden, but a stone doth be.

And over her Grave the Man doth remain,

his blade never met the vile Serpent’s vein.

Keep theflower coin in the far-rightslot, butflip it to show the Serpent.Keep the coin withthe woman in the same slot, butflip it to show the gravestone. Flip the sword coin back to the man, and place it in the center.

Now unto you falls a grievous chore,

who carries blame for what fate had in store?

There is no puzzle to solve here, just choose who you think is “to blame”. However, you answer thiscanaffect the game’s ending. So choose wisely.

The one once so gallant had fled from day’s sheen,

The one whom he swore to shield in her life,

now lays in a grave, away from his sight.

The “one once so gallant” is the coin with the image of the man, and the “icon of sin” is the snake.Since the man is as far away from the snake as can be, he is in the far left slot, while the snake is in the far right slot. The “one whom he swore to shield” now “lays in a grave”, so,turn the coin with the woman’s face so that the gravestone is showing, and place it in the slot next to the snake.

His blade strikes that which from the roots doth

rise, followed by guilt and the mark of demise.

The life he once had he has left behind,

where once there was love, now a stone resides.

So, we’ll now flip the coin with the man so that it is a sword, and the coin with the snake, so that it is a flower. You may be thinking that the sword should be in the center spot, but instead place it to the left of the center. In the center should be the flower. Since he “left” his life behind, and there a “stone resides”,place the gravestone coin to the left of the sword.

He kneels by the crown that casts a cruel shade

By them not a soul, not a sight, nor sound,

and yet, evil slithers upon radiant ground.

Placethe snake coin under the sun in the far right slot, as it slithers upon “radiant ground”.The coin with the woman engraved upon it is in the center,as the shadows are being cast upon her, andthe coin with the man should be to the left of her, as he kneels “by that crown that casts a cruel shade”.

The best that from death and decay had spawned,

and choose where the burden of sin doth lay.

There isn’t a “correct” answer here. Just choose who you think is responsible. This is one of those things that is going to affect the end of the game.
